10:53 PMThe dream behind Rav Shalom Ber Sorotzkin’s trip to Uman: Rav Shalom Ber Sorotzkin’s unprecedented trip to Uman for Rosh Hashanah in exchange for an $11 million donation to his yeshivah, Ateres Shlomo, continues to make waves. • It now emerges that immediately after Rosh Hashanah, one of the donors, who lives in Brazil, contacted Rav Sorotzkin and told him, “Come to me urgently.” The Rosh Yeshivah, who was at the airport in Istanbul on his way to New York, changed his plans and boarded the first available flight to Brazil. • Upon arriving at the donor’s office, the donor gathered his Jewish employees and shared with them a startling story. He related that on Rosh Hashanah night he had a dream where he saw Rav Sorotzkin standing at the tziyun of Rav Nachman and tearfully reciting Tehillim. Asked why he was weeping, the rosh yeshiva explained that he was far from his yeshivah and that it was difficult to travel so much. • At this point in the dream, Rav Nachman suddenly appeared and told Rav Sorotzkin, “Hakadosh Baruch Hu runs the world.” He then turned to the donor and said, “You should make sure to make him especially happy.” He then woke up. The donor then announced that he was adding an additional $500,000 from his personal funds to the sum, although it was more than he could afford to make Rav Sorotzkin happy.

11:59 PMIs Mamdani mellowing?: Mayor Mamdani passed on an opportunity today to continue his virulent Israel-bashing, sparking faint hopes that the anti-Israel politician is heeding calls to stop stoking antisemitism. • Mamdani spoke publicly for the first time on his plans to skip the protests against PM Netanyahu when he arrives in New York next week for the UN General Assembly. He said he’s already “made very clear about my views, my thoughts, my assessments” on the matter but he was focused on ensuring the city is prepared to host representatives from across the world, keep New Yorkers safe, and keep traffic flowing. • It’s a far cry from his typically strident anti-Israel rhetoric and baseless threats to arrest Netanyahu. And he has appeared to call on New Yorkers to protest, something that would be unheard of for a mayor who in in charge of quelling protests. He denied today making that call, saying “I’ve never encouraged them to protest, but I always told them they have the right to do so, and we respect that right, and this city is proud of the first amendment.”

3:46 PMBREAKING: Maimonides slipping away with panel vote to merge: Efforts by askanim to stop the proposed merger of Maimonides Medical Center into NYC’s publicly run system were stymied this morning when a key state panel voted unanimously to move it forward. It appears that there is just one more vote required before Boro Park’s premier hospital folds into NYC Health + Hospitals. • The New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council vote came after a judge ruled that a previous attempt to merge Maimonides was unconstitutional without it. It comes after a unanimous subcommittee vote in August, which included testimony by askanim warning that the merger would decimate the hospital’s medical professionals base and cause patient care to drop. • For the merger to now be completed, a number of administrative moves are now required, including notifying the Department of Health 30 days in advance. There are two lawsuits ongoing that may delay or cancel it.
4:52 PM📟 PAGER DAY: • Two years ago today, thousands of Hezbollah pagers started beeping across Lebanon. • What followed on September 17–18, 2024 was the culmination of one of Israel’s most elaborate intelligence deceptions: an operation built over years to convince Hezbollah to purchase, inspect and distribute compromised communications equipment to its own personnel. • The pagers were timed to give the terrorists enough time to pull them out of their pockets and close to their faces before they exploded. Hundreds of not thousands of Hezbollah terrorists died in the two day operation, throwing the terror group into disarray.
5:56 PMBritain coming apart at the seams: Anger over the government’s immigration policies spilled over in one British village which voted in a symbolic referendum yesterday to leave the United Kingdom. • About 92% of Piddington residents voted 285 to 26 to “secede from the UK and pursue self-determination” after the government announced plans to convert a former army garrison into a camp for 1,256 male asylum seekers. Residents say the migrants would outnumber villagers by four to one and increase the risk of crime. • Tim McNally, the chairman of the parish council, acknowledged that the vote had no legal standing but added, “We are the village formerly known as Piddington. Today we are to be known as the principality of Piddington, and we will be putting up a sign to that effect.” • PM Andy Burnham said in response to the vote that he understood the “strength of feeling” about migration, which has been blamed for thousands of violent crimes against British women. He said he would study the issue. • In the meantime, Piddington officials say they have been approached by 500 town and village councilors and residents for advice on replicating the campaign, which was backed by the Conservatives, Reform UK and the Liberal Democrats.

11:57 PMWhite House Pulls ICE Director Nomination • The White House withdrew Oklahoma state trooper Lance Schroyer’s nomination to lead ICE which has been without a Senate-confirmed director for more than a decade • The nomination stalled after Sen. 12:07 AMHochul rebuffs union demand on tuition aid: Gov. Hochul vowed to fulfill her pledge to allow more than 2.7 million New York public, parochial and private school students to access President Trump’s “freedom scholarships,” rejecting opposition from the powerful teachers union. • The Education Freedom Tax Credit, which goes in effect next year, provides a 100% federal tax credit for donations of up to $1,700 annually to approved scholarship-granting organizations. The nonprofit groups would then offer scholarships, which families from all schools could use to defray tuition costs. The governor of each state decides whether to opt-in the program. • Leaders of the teachers unions and other groups such as the NAACP claimed the program is a back-door scheme to siphon taxpayers dollars from public schools. Teachers union president Mike Mulgrew claimed during a press conference that “it’s a bad thing when we’re going to take taxpayer dollars and give it to folks with no accountability.” He then led a chant, “Public Schools Shout, Hochul Opt-Out!” • But Hochul, who told Agudah officials in the spring that she will opt New York in because it benefits all students, rejected the claims. The tax credit is funded by private donations and is not a voucher program, so no funds are diverted from public schools. Taxpayer-funded vouchers can typically only be used toward tuition at non-public schools whereas the federal tax-credit scholarship can be used by eligible students in public schools.
