12:56 AMHear ye, hear ye!: The world’s best town criers, that ancient profession which informed and amused during the Middle Ages before microphones and media existed, gathered recently to show off their skills in an international competition in Chester, England. • The World Town Crier Tournament had 25 competitors from eight nations who were decked out in period attire. Participants performed three cries: one on their home towns, one on a retail store that sponsored the event and another on their hotel accommodations. They were judged on vocal power, clarity, showmanship and audience engagement. An Australian won first place, followed by a Belgian. • While town criers date as far back as ancient Greece and Rome, their prevalence in England beginning in the Middle Ages resulted in the image many associate with the role today. Literacy rates were much lower then, so criers were responsible for communicating news, beginning announcements with an exclamation of “oyez,” which is pronounced “oh yay” and derives from a French word meaning “to listen.”
1:10 AMEnd of the leap second: While February famously gets an extra day every four years, what’s less known is the leap second which is periodically added to a year — since 1972, some 27 leap seconds have been added. They rarely make a difference in people’s lives, though Reddit famously crashed in 2012 because of it. • Now, the General Conference on Weights and Measures held its annual meeting in France and timekeepers decided to get rid of the leap second. • Traditionally, one Earth orbit around the sun determines the length of a year, and one Earth rotation on its axis determines the length of a day. Because it takes Earth around 365.25 days to go around the sun, timekeepers add that extra leap day once every four years to make sure our seasonal calendar stays aligned with the orbit. • But Earth’s daily rotation is slightly off every day — last Wednesday, for example, was 24 hours and 0.0006471 seconds. While the panel would add a leap second whenever the atomic clock differed by more than 0.9 seconds, they have now voted to increase this margin to one hour. This negates the need for a leap second and creates the much rarer leap hour, though that change will likely not be needed for thousands of years. • Rabbanim will likely have to decide what to do when the difference between the real time and atomic time is minutes apart, both for zman tefillah, Shabbosos and other halachic issues.

Netanyahu's coalition bloc fell one seat, from 49 to 48, while opposition parties stayed steady at 54 seats. • This means that the opposition parties would still need additional partners to pass the 61-seat majority line.
