YJP Miami Packs The Gale For Shabbat 1000 About 1,000 young Jewish professionals filled The Gale Hotel & Residences on Friday night for YJP Miami’s second annual Shabbat 1000. The night opened with cocktails and a DJ, moved into Friday night services, then a full Shabbat dinner. Hotel rooms for the weekend sold out before the event even started. YJP just posted the recap, and the candle-lighting scene is the one making the rounds. Rows of glass votives, string lights, and a packed room of 20s and 30s lighting Shabbat together downtown. This is now one of the biggest young-adult Shabbats in Miami. Beloved Fort Lauderdale Restaurant Hen Mabel Stolen From Top Hat Deli Mabel, the well-known hen at Top Hat Deli in Fort Lauderdale, was stolen from the restaurant’s front door. Staff say they greeted her every morning. General manager Julio Rodriguez noticed she was gone when the restaurant opened Wednesday, August 26. He searched the property, then checked the cameras. Surveillance shows a man walking up and taking the bird. Mabel had become a neighborhood staple. Customers knew her. Employees looked for her. Donalds Tells Student Antisemitism Will Not Be Tolerated On Florida Campuses An FAU college student representing the group Students Supporting Israel asked Byron Donalds, at a Donalds for Florida campaign stop, how he would keep antisemitism off Florida college campuses. The room called it a direct question. Donalds gave a short answer. “We will not tolerate antisemitism or bigotry at all on any of our campuses.” The audience clapped. Campus antisemitism has been a live issue in Florida for years, from protest crackdowns after Oct. 7 to later fights over student speech, group chats, and school discipline. Donalds, a Southwest Florida congressman running for governor, has previously said he treats antisemitism the same as other bigotry and that students should not be blocked from class. RJC Endorses Former Boca Mayor Scott Singer For Congress In FL-25 The Republican Jewish Coalition has endorsed former Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer in Florida’s 25th Congressional District race. Singer, a longtime RJC leader, is the GOP nominee after winning the August primary. He now faces Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz in November in the newly drawn coastal district that runs from Delray Beach down through Boca, Broward, and into Miami Beach. RJC said this is its only chance this cycle to increase the number of Jewish Republicans in Congress. The group pointed to Singer’s record as a three-term Boca mayor, including seven straight property tax cuts, a 25% drop in crime from already low levels, and faster permitting that helped bring in new jobs. President Trump also endorsed Singer this week. RJC noted that both candidates support the U.S.-Israel relationship, but argued that electing Singer is the path to keeping a Republican House majority and a pro-Israel majority in Congress. Miami-Dade Mayor Campaigns Against Statewide Property Tax Cut Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava launched a campaigng; Wednesday against Amendment 3, the GOP-backed Florida ballot measure that would sharply raise the homestead exemption on primary homes. The proposal would lift the exemption from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. It needs 60% TV statewide approval in November. County officials say the change would cut about 20% of Miami-Dade’s property tax revenue, roughly $385 million in the first year and nearly $700 million once fully in effect. Levine Cava said that money funds police, fire rescue, ambulances, jails, roads, parks, libraries, transit, and Jackson Health. “It threatens everything from public safety and emergency response to our roads, parks, our libraries,” she said. “These are not luxuries.” She called the amendment deceptive and is raising money through a PAC, No on 3 Protect Our Homes. One hundred and sixty-three missing children, including dozens in the Miami area, were found in what Florida officials called "one of the largest child-recovery operations in American history." Operation Statewide Shield took place from Aug. 17 to 21 in efforts that "focused on identifying, locating, and recovering missing children under the age of 18," according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). “The children ranged in age from 2 months to 17 years old, and many had experienced various levels of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or exposure to other criminal activity,” authorities said in a news release.

Mount Sinai Medical Center has completed the first phase of its new Westchester facility and expects to welcome its first patients in early October. The four-story, 112,000-square-foot facility will open with a 26-bay emergency department, MRI, two CT scanners, ultrasound services and a dedicated Baker Act receiving unit for patients in mental health crisis. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 25. The facility is the first phase of a planned hospital campus that will eventually include a full-service hospital.

A Florida woman who fatally shot a retired Army staff sergeant during a confrontation in a Walmart parking lot will not face criminal charges after prosecutors determined she acted in self-defense. Melissa Payne shot 62-year-old Bart Diguglielmo outside a Walmart in North Lauderdale shortly before 12:30 p.m. on June 30. The Broward County State Attorney’s Office determined that Payne is protected from prosecution under Florida’s “stand your ground” law, which provides legal immunity in certain cases involving the use of deadly force in self-defense. A lightning strike at the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue building in Doral sent an off-duty Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy to the hospital. Traffic cameras on the Turnpike showed an ambulance racing down the expressway followed by multiple police cruisers. According to MDFR, first responders arrived after receiving reports of a vehicle being struck by lightning outside of the building. An off-duty MDSO deputy in the area was transported as a trauma alert to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital.

Miami’s LEC Opens Year With 2,500 Students And Two New Buildings Lubavitch Educational Center launched the new school year with 2,500 students across five campuses and six buildings, including two newly acquired facilities. The expansion includes a new Mesivta campus in Miami Gardens and two wings of a recently purchased building on the expanded Campus Chaya Mushka, next to Beit Apel. The new space houses the Rebbetzin Rivka Korf Preschool Building, dedicated by Avraham and Brochie Shaulson, and the Rebbetzin Rochel Pinson High School Building for Beis Chana High School, dedicated by Reut and Mendel Pinson. Construction crews worked around the clock all summer to get the buildings ready. Students were greeted by teachers in finished classrooms on day one. LEC now runs eleven divisions, from Early Stages infants through Yeshiva Gedolah, with close to 500 staff.

Palm Beach County Fires Building Inspector After Alleged Nazi Salute A Palm Beach County building inspector has been fired after a photo circulated showing him allegedly making a Nazi salute during a road-rage incident. The Aug. 22 encounter happened as the employee was driving a county vehicle. He is accused of shouting “Heil Hitler” and throwing a salute at another driver. StopAntisemitism posted the photo, and it spread quickly. County officials say the worker was terminated Aug. 28. The investigation is still open, and the employee has until Sept. 4 to appeal. The county has not released his name, citing threats. The other driver, who has also stayed anonymous, said the clash started when he cut in front of the county vehicle while turning into a shopping plaza. He said he rolled down his window to apologize and was met with antisemitic slurs instead. County Administrator Joseph Abruzzo said there is no place for antisemitism, hatred, or discrimination in Palm Beach County government. Chabad At UCF Hosts Kosher Tailgate Before Knights Kickoff Chabad at the University of Central Florida, known on campus as JEWCF, hosted a kosher tailgate before the Knights opened the season Thursday night at Acrisure Bounce House. Jewish students and friends gathered on campus ahead of the 7 p.m. kickoff against Bethune-Cookman. The setup was simple and very UCF: kosher food, tefillin, and game-day energy before the Knights rolled to a 73-6 win. UCF has one of the largest Jewish student populations of any campus outside Israel. For many students, a kosher tailgate is the difference between showing up to the Bounce House with the crowd or sitting the pregame out. 3 Arrested In Counterfeit Amiri And Drug Probe At Miami Store Three people were arrested after an undercover operation at The Legend Gang Store on Northwest Seventh Street in West Miami-Dade. Investigators say Yeinys Rodriguez-Canizares, Roynel Matos, and Yassel Darboys were selling fake Amiri clothing and shoes, then later testosterone. Undercover buys started in March with $970 in Amiri clothes. Another $1,100 in Amiri shoes followed in April. Customs and an Amiri representative confirmed the merchandise was counterfeit. In May, an undercover investigator bought testosterone for $300 in a deal allegedly arranged by Matos and involving Darboys and Rodriguez-Canizares. A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s lab confirmed it was testosterone cypionate. Authorities also tracked more than $815,000 in wire transfers sent to financial institutions in Istanbul, Turkey. Rodriguez-Canizares and Matos face charges that include racketeering, counterfeiting, and a controlled substance offense. Darboys is charged in connection with racketeering and the drug sale. In bond court Thursday, Rodriguez-Canizares’ bond was set at $25,000 and Matos’ at $35,000, both with a Nebbia requirement.
