Preakness Move To Sunday Opens Baltimore Tradition To Orthodox Community Baltimore City Councilman Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer is praising the decision to move the Preakness Stakes from Saturday to Sunday beginning in 2027, saying it will allow Baltimore’s Orthodox Jewish community to fully participate in one of the city’s biggest traditions for the first time. In a Baltimore Sun guest commentary published Sunday, Schleifer noted that the race’s longtime Saturday schedule conflicted with Shabbos, preventing observant Jews from driving to or otherwise fully participating in Preakness Day. Schleifer credited Gov. Wes Moore with helping secure the Preakness’ future in Baltimore while making the event more accessible.

Baltimore County employee accused of collecting $16k while not working over 200 hours A new report from the Baltimore County Office of the Inspector General is accusing an employee with the county's Department of Permits, Approvals and Inspections of not working for over 239 hours, while collecting over $16thousand in pay. The employee allegedly spent months sitting in the parking lot, or leaving work hours early, all while collecting a paycheck. The report suggests the total loss for the county could be significantly higher, since data from previous years is no longer available, and the employee is believed to have done this for years. County supervisors were called out in the report for failing to adequately oversee how the worker used county time.

Maryland Redistricting Battle Heads To State’s Highest Court A legal battle over Maryland’s proposed congressional redistricting amendment is heading to the Supreme Court of Maryland after two circuit court judges separately ruled that the measure should not appear on the November ballot. Judges in Anne Arundel and Dorchester counties found legal problems with the proposed amendment, including issues with how it was advanced and presented to voters. Both rulings have been stayed while the state appeals. The proposed constitutional amendment would change how Maryland’s constitutional redistricting standards apply to congressional districts. It would not itself redraw the state’s congressional map. The Supreme Court of Maryland is scheduled to hear the first challenge on Thursday, September 3, with the ultimate fate of the ballot question still unresolved.

47 People With Baltimore-Based Tour Company Missing After Deadly Nepal Floods Forty-seven people traveling with Baltimore-based Himalayan Glacier Adventure and Travel Company remain missing following catastrophic flash floods near the Nepal-China border. The group includes 40 travelers and seven guides who were on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet. The company says it lost contact with the group Wednesday morning after they finished breakfast and prepared to continue toward the border. The company’s managing director, Sanket Pandey, told WBAL that his uncle is among those missing. Search and rescue efforts remain underway as the death toll from the devastating flooding continues to rise. Himalayan Glacier has operated its U.S. office in Baltimore since 2019.

Baltimore police investigating rise in high-tech car thefts Baltimore police are investigating a rise in car thefts using high-tech methods targeting key fobs, following about a dozen cases this summer, a department spokesperson said. Often called key fob cloning, thieves have discovered methods to capture, relay or mimic a key fob's signal, tricking a vehicle into believing the real key is nearby. To avoid being the victim of a key fob cloning theft, police are urging residents to store their key fobs further inside the home to block electromagnetic signals from being easily picked up. There are bags and boxes available for purchase designed for this purpose, and an old fashioned steering wheel lock is also recommended. Baltimore police have recorded 3,003 vehicle thefts so far this year, including a 25% increase in the Northwest District.

Baltimore Police Seek ‘Armed and Dangerous’ Suspect in Deadly Double Shooting Baltimore Police are asking for the public’s help locating 24-year-old Dashawn Taylor, who is wanted in connection with a deadly double shooting. Police say Taylor is wanted for the June 23 shooting of 38-year-old Asia Williams in the 5200 block of York Road. Williams was killed, and a 27-year-old man was also injured. Authorities say Taylor should be considered armed and dangerous and warn the public not to approach him.

Maryland joins lawsuit against Amazon over alleged secret advertising scheme Maryland has joined with 21 other states and the FTC in a lawsuit against Amazon, claiming the company "secretly inflated prices in its online search advertising auctions." The lawsuit claims Amazon secretly hiked advertising prices for over 7 years, earning billions from “unwitting” advertisers. Amazon also allegedly hid the pricing from the public to avoid backlash, and gave false and misleading answers to advertisers who questioned the advertising pricing.

Harbor redevelopment project could receive 95% tax break The Baltimore Development Corporation (BDC) announced yesterday it has awarded a massive tax break to MCB Real Estate, the developer for the Baltimore Harbor redevelopment project. The developer could see a tax break of up to 95% for 25 years. The redevelopment plan calls for replacing two aging Harborplace pavilions at Pratt and Light streets with new commercial, retail and high-rise apartment buildings. While demolition is slated to begin this fall, there has been no announcement yet if MCB has secured private financing for it's share of the project, estimated at around $600 million. On top of the tax breaks, the city is expected to spend an additional $400 million of public money for roadway, park and waterfront promenade improvements.

All lanes of I-695 re-opened after highway closure Maryland highway officials have now confirmed that all lanes are now open on I-695. The entire outer loop was closer earlier today between exit 11A and I-95 due to "police activity.” The incident may have been a case of road rage with a firearm, there were no injuries reported.

Baltimore drinking water reservoir down 20 feet, losing 6 inches a week Baltimore City's Department of Public Works announced water levels in the Prettyboy reservoir are now 20 feet below normal, following 3 years of below average rainfall. The reservoir is managed by Baltimore City, despite being located in the county, and supplies drinking water to 1.8 million people. Despite a fairly rainy summer, precipitation has been localized and has not sufficiently recharged the groundwater supply. If water levels in the reservoir continue to drop, Baltimore may begin to draw drinking water from the Susquehanna River, something the city has not done since 2002. A test was conducted in July for using the Susquehanna, and the city is preparing operations in case use of the river becomes necessary.

Maryland Paid Leave Program Moving Forward After Years of Delays Maryland is moving ahead with its long-delayed paid family and medical leave program. Beginning January 1, 2027, workers and employers will begin contributing to the program, with a total contribution rate of 0.9% of wages, generally split between employers and employees. Starting in January 2028, eligible workers will be able to receive up to 12 weeks of job-protected paid leave for qualifying family and medical needs, with benefits of up to $1,000 per week.

Southwest to open its first lounge at BWI Southwest Airlines has announced it plans on opening its first airport lounges, including at BWI. Man Accused of Threatening Councilman Yitzy Schleifer After Denying Zoning Request A Pikesville man is accused of threatening Baltimore City Councilman Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer following a zoning denial involving a proposed methadone clinic on Park Heights Avenue. Schleifer opposed the request to place the methadone clinic on Park Heights. Months later, the written threats began, including alleged threats to attack him while he was walking on Shabbos. New direct MARC train to run between Baltimore and Silver Spring A new MARC direct train service has been announced that will connect Montgomery County communities on the Brunswick Line and Baltimore-Camden Station on the Camden Line. By eliminating transfers, the new one-seat ride will cut some travel times in half, and make taking the train more competitive with driving. Starting Sep. 28, travelers in Silver Spring, College Park, Laurel and more will have have the option to take a direct train to Baltimore-Camden Station in the morning, and a direct return trip in the evening. The new service will not require any additional funding, with the MTA simply adjusting schedules on the Brunswick and Camden lines.

The new program, established through will allow community members to purchase certificates to give to Meshulachim while also helping support local mosdos. BREAKING: Maryland Supreme Court Puts Redistricting Question Back on November Ballot The Supreme Court of Maryland has ruled that a proposed congressional redistricting constitutional amendment can appear on the November ballot, reversing lower court rulings that had blocked the measure. The decision came just hours after the state’s highest court heard oral arguments over the proposed amendment.

Baltimore County kitten tests positive for rabies Earlier this week, a 4-month old kitten found along Paper Mill Rd in Jacksonville, Baltimore County, tested positive for rabies. Baltimore County Animal Services has identified at least one human exposure to the kitten. Local health officials are reminding the public to stay away from stray animals, and to make sure pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations.

AUDIT: Maryland failed to collect $800+ million in unpaid tolls A new audit from the Office of Legislative Audits has found that the Maryland Transportation Authority failed to collect over $818 million in unpaid tolls and penalties from out-of-state motorists. The audit found that Maryland could have entered into enforcement agreements with other states, hired a private collection agency or sought approval to refer the debt to Maryland’s Central Collection Unit - but failed to do so. The uncollected total spanned 5 years, from 2020 - 2025, with most outstanding debt over one year old. The audit comes at a time when the MTA is seeing rising construction and operating costs, and at a time when the state is estimating a structural budget gap of about $3 billion in the coming fiscal year.

Attempted Home Entry Ends in Arrest Baltimore Shomrim responded today to an incident involving an individual allegedly attempting to enter a residence while the homeowner was inside. Shomrim members assisted at the scene, coordinated with police, and provided video evidence to officers. Property was stolen from the residence, including a vehicle. Shomrim later assisted in locating the stolen vehicle, which was recovered by police and taken for examination for possible evidence. Residents are reminded to keep all doors and windows locked and remain alert for suspicious activity.

Baltimore raccoon tests positive for rabies - only a short drive from the community The apparent surge of animals testing positive for rabies is hitting closer to home, with the latest confirmed case only a few miles away in Northwest Baltimore. Baltimore City Animal Control picked up a dead raccoon from a backyard on the 4300 block of Groveland Avenue, which tested positive for rabies yesterday. Health officials have identified one person who may have been bitten. This follows a kitten which tested positive for rabies in Baltimore County. Health officials are warning the public to contact the city health department if they have any contact with a raccoon. Pet owners are also urged to make sure their pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations, and to immediately call a vet if any suspicious wounds appear on their pet.

Message to Admin: Rabid Raccoon Reported Near Taney Road The following was sent to Baltimore Scoop by a community member I saw your story last week about the dead raccoon and wanted to make you aware of another incident inside the community. A dead raccoon was recently found near my parents’ home on Taney Road near Berkeley Avenue. The city came and picked it up, and we were later informed that it tested positive for rabies.

Tree falls on MTA bus, 5 injured A tree fell on the MTA LocalLink 87 bus this morning, injuring five passengers, the Baltimore County Fire Department said. The incident happened around 8:20 this morning, on Main Street in Reisterstown. The five injured passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Flight diverted to BWI as unruly passenger duct taped to his seat An American Airlines flight from Dallas to Newark was diverted to BWI after a disturbance on the flight. 67 year old Arthur Lundeen is facing charges of second-degree assault and disorderly conduct, after allegedly engaging in violent behavior on the flight, including attempting to bite passengers, in addition to using racist slurs.
