Jooish Updates

8/31/26

Moshe Grunwald: iOS-only update: Today, a new version of Jooish was released on the App Store. It adds support for Smart Speed and Voice Boost for podcasts. (Did you know Jooish now has podcasts? Check them out here: https://jooish.app/podcasts ) Smart Speed: This removes the blank space between spoken words. Some speakers take long pauses, so Smart Speed shortens them. It also tracks how much time you’ve saved. Once you’ve saved at least one minute, you’ll see it next to the menu option. This works separately from playback speed. Voice Boost: Podcasts are mostly spoken audio, which means they’re mostly people talking. However, the audio isn’t always tuned for speech and can sound much better when voices are emphasized. Voice Boost does this automatically. These features are possible because Jooish iOS now has a custom audio-processing engine. They’re currently only available on iOS. If you’d like to see them on Android, please reply privately to this message and let me know.

Letter: Maybe The Real Seminary Question Is The Shidduch Résumé To The Editors of TLS, I read last week’s letter, “How Are Families Supposed To Afford Seminary?”, and nodded the whole way through. I have five daughters. Two are married, one is in sem right now, and two are still to go. So I know the math. But I want to point out the line in that letter that I think is the real answer: “If a girl doesn’t go, people ask why.” The writer said he hears that as a shadchan. I hear it as a mother, every single time. READ MORE ⤵️ https://thelakewoodscoop.com/news/letter-maybe-the-real-seminary-question-is-the-shidduch-resume/

Four flight attendants were injured. One was taken to the hospital. United said no passengers were hurt. The Boeing 777 carried 190 passengers and 10 crew and landed safely around 9:44 p.m. The pilot told air traffic control the turbulence lasted only a couple of seconds and felt like wake turbulence. Ocean Swallows Long Beach Peninsula Neighborhood — LA Scoop Witnesses Destruction Firsthand As Waves Crash Directly Into Homes The Pacific Ocean is literally overtaking portions of Long Beach’s Peninsula neighborhood, with powerful waves and severe beach erosion threatening homes that once stood hundreds of feet from the water. LA Scoop is on the scene witnessing the destruction firsthand. As seen in our video, the beach has completely disappeared in the hardest-hit areas. Waves are now crashing directly into homes that just a few years ago were separated from the ocean by hundreds of feet of sandy beach. The destruction is staggering. With El Niño raising concerns about stronger winter storms and destructive surf, residents fear the worst may still be ahead. Despite millions spent fighting coastal erosion, the ocean continues reclaiming the shoreline, leaving homes increasingly vulnerable.

My favorite stage of creating a painting is the finishing touches. This is where everything truly comes to life. By carefully adding highlights, shadows, and subtle contrasts, I can bring out details and create a greater sense of depth. The painting is predominantly blue, so the sky gives me an opportunity to introduce warmer oranges and purples, creating contrast and bringing the entire composition together. Chamath Palihapitiya is one of my favorite investors. What many people don’t know is that he has a fascinating connection to Israel. Chamath shared a story about his time at ICQ, when he traveled from the East Coast of the United States to Tel Aviv every quarter for two years. When he was 25, he was stepping into a leadership role and experiencing Israel’s emerging tech ecosystem firsthand. He worked alongside legendary figures like Yossi Vardi and got a front-row seat to a culture unlike any other. But one story really stood out. During one visit, Chamath went to a restaurant in Jaffa. When someone asked how he liked the food, he said he did. The response? “Oh, a bomb went off here just three days ago.” He was shaken. But what stayed with him wasn’t just the shock of that moment. It was the resilience of the Israeli people. Despite the uncertainty and the very real challenges around them, life went on. Restaurants stayed open. People gathered. Businesses operated. And entrepreneurs kept building, innovating, and moving forward. That’s the spirit of Israel. A country that doesn’t stop living, creating, or dreaming in the face of adversity. And for Chamath, witnessing that resilience firsthand left a lasting impression.

Guinness Open Gate Brewery In Maryland To Close Nov. 1 After eight years in Baltimore County, the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Halethorpe will permanently close to the public after Nov. 1. Parent company Diageo said rising operating costs, economic pressures and shifts in consumer demand made the Baltimore operation increasingly difficult to sustain. The brewery opened in 2018, marking Guinness’ return to brewing on American soil for the first time since 1954. Diageo invested approximately $90 million in the Maryland project, and the attraction has welcomed more than 2 million visitors since opening. The closure marks the end of a major Baltimore County attraction that brought Guinness brewing back to Maryland and drew visitors from across the region and beyond. 🍺 Last call in Halethorpe: Nov. 1.

Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company Shares Helpful Lulav Storage Tip The Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company is already thinking ahead to Pesach and has a useful reminder for the Baltimore Jewish community. For those who save their lulav to burn with their chametz before Pesach, PVFC recommends removing the lulav from its plastic bag after Sukkos and wrapping it in newspaper instead. This helps prevent the lulav, particularly the koishele, from becoming moldy during the months it is stored. A helpful tip from our local firefighters — six months early! 🔥🌿

UPDATE: 12-Year-Old Was Driving Stolen Kia In Fatal Northwest Baltimore Crash Baltimore Police now say a 12-year-old boy was behind the wheel of the stolen Kia that struck and killed 69-year-old motorcyclist Barry Wright in Northwest Baltimore last week. Despite the fatal crash, the 12-year-old will not face criminal charges. Under Maryland law, children under 13 generally cannot be charged in cases like this because vehicular manslaughter is not classified as a crime of violence. Instead, police filed a Child in Need of Supervision (CINS) referral, which could result in court-ordered supervision, counseling or other intervention. A 15-year-old girl who police say was a passenger in the stolen Kia has been charged with motor vehicle theft. The Sept. 30 crash killed Wright, 69, after the stolen Kia collided with his motorcycle. As Baltimore Scoop previously reported, the Kia involved in the crash had been stolen from within our community.

Lets Show Support For Officers Rosenbloom And Mandelbaum The Baltimore Scoop is encouraging Community members to attend court in support of Officers Menachem Rosenbloom and Mordechai Mandelbaum, who are facing charges stemming from an incident in Baltimore City. The case is scheduled for Thursday October 8, at the Cummings Courthouse, 111 N. Calvert Street in Baltimore City. Court is expected to begin at 9 a.m. in Room 404C. The officers are accused in connection with a June 26, 2025 incident near the 700 block of E. Chase Street. According to the indictment, the case centers around claims that one officer used pepper spray without legal justification. We believe this case is being blown out of proportion and unfairly targets hard working and upstanding officers who were dealing with a chaotic situation involving a fleeing suspect. Anyone able to attend is encouraged to come show support. There is no commitment required. Community members are welcome to come later in the day if they cannot be there at 9 a.m., and anyone who can only stay for a short time is welcome to leave when they need to.

According to the reports, KEYS Empowers listed $427,201 in salaries and wages despite reporting zero employees. The nonprofit reportedly disclosed approximately $2 million in annual revenue, $79,701 in travel expenses, and $242,288 in conference, convention, and meeting expenses. The filings reportedly listed no compensation for Muhammad personally. The reported figures raise questions about who received the salary payments and how the organization classified its workforce.
