3:12 PMPeople of Our Community: Raphael Misud of Green Summit Realty Raphael Misud is the owner of Green Summit Realty and has been a licensed real estate agent since 2014, spending the past seven years working in the Baltimore market. One of the biggest mistakes he sees homebuyers make? Taking advice from friends or relatives who may not understand Maryland's real estate market. His advice is to trust an experienced local professional who understands the laws, customs and process. And the strangest thing he's ever seen while showing a home? A house where the only way to reach the kitchen was by walking through a bedroom! Whether you're buying or selling, Raphael believes having the right guidance can make all the difference. 📲 Call or text Raphael: 443-360-5360

12:58 AMNearly 1.9 Million Maryland Residents Faced Potential Water Outage Following Power Failure A September 29 electrical failure at WSSC Water’s Potomac Water Filtration Plant reportedly brought parts of Montgomery and Prince George’s counties within hours of losing running water. Multiple electrical problems disrupted pumping operations, but crews managed to restore service before water supplies ran out in affected communities. WSSC Water is now seeking approximately $150 million in government funding for critical electrical upgrades. An earlier assessment had already identified 10 necessary projects, including three top priorities estimated at $130 million. The utility, which serves approximately 1.9 million residents, hopes to secure state or federal funding rather than placing the entire cost on customers through higher water bills. Following the incident, WSSC CEO Kishia Powell urged residents to maintain emergency water supplies of at least one gallon per person per day for three days.

At a time when maintaining Shabbos, kashrus and Jewish education in America was an enormous challenge, he worked tirelessly to preserve Torah life. His kever remains in the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation cemetery on Belair Road, 164 years after his passing in 1862. A remarkable piece of Jewish history, right here in our own city.

12:28 AMFederal Crackdown Uncovers At Least $64 Million In Maryland Fraud Cases Federal prosecutors have identified at least $64 million in fraudulent payments tied to Maryland residents and businesses this year, involving COVID-19 relief funds, unemployment benefits, tax fraud, and food assistance programs. U.S. Attorney Kelly Hayes described the scale of fraud as “astronomical,” warning that the cases uncovered so far represent only the “tip of the iceberg.” Among the largest cases, prosecutors charged the CEO of a Gaithersburg company with allegedly submitting more than $100 million in false COVID-19 testing claims, of which insurers reportedly paid over $50 million. Other cases involved former Maryland Department of Labor contractors accused of manipulating unemployment claims, fraudulent PPP loans, tax schemes, and stolen SNAP benefits. Hayes warned that federal authorities are intensifying investigations and prosecutions, saying the actual amount of fraud is believed to be significantly higher than what has already been uncovered. 10:55 PMSuspect Pleads Guilty after Desecrating Maryland Jewish Cemetery with Swastikas A Dundalk resident named George Horn has pleaded guilty to religious vandalism charges, after he desecrated headstones at the Ohr Knesseth Israel Anshe Sfard Cemetery in July 2023. The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland said Horn used black spray paint to deface 12 headstones with swastikas, some of which couldn’t be fully cleaned off, and required replacing. Horn admitted to specifically targeting a Jewish cemetery, and investigators found a journal of his filled with Nazi and white supremacist references. Horn's sentencing is scheduled for January, and he could face a maximum of three years in prison.

11:33 PMOver 100 Events a Year Planned for Pimlico Race Course 100 race days a year are planned for Pimlico Race Course, once renovations are completed - a major increase from the 15 racing days a year held previously. Additionally, a new, under construction clubhouse is expected to host year-round conferences and events, with an estimated capacity of 1,000–1,400 people. The Preakness is expected back in May 2027, but the permanent clubhouse is targeted for 2028. A start date for the full expanded racing and events calendar has not been announced. The potential impact on traffic, noise and neighborhood remains an unanswered question.
1:30 AMBaltimore City Voters to Decide on Proposed Baby Fund Baltimore City voters will see Question I on their ballots this year. A vote FOR the question would dedicate a percentage of property tax revenue to a new baby fund, aimed at helping families with newborns. Organizers estimate the fund would require over $15 million a year. Eligibility for the fund, and how the money will be given to families, would be decided by the mayor and City Council. An original proposal would have guaranteed $1,000 to every Baltimore baby, but that proposal is NOT what is being offered to voters this election.
