Near-Total Lunar Eclipse Will Be Visible Over Los Angeles Thursday Night Southern California skywatchers are in for a show Thursday night, August 27, when a deep partial lunar eclipse will turn much of the full moon a dark reddish-copper color. The moon will rise over Los Angeles around 7:18 p.m., with the partial eclipse beginning around 7:34 p.m. The eclipse will reach its peak at approximately 9:13 p.m., when 96% of the moon’s disk will be inside Earth’s shadow, making it look very close to a total “blood moon.” The main eclipse will continue until approximately 10:52 p.m. No special glasses are needed — unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. Griffith Observatory will open its grounds for public eclipse viewing beginning at 7:25 p.m. and will also provide a live online broadcast. And if you miss this one, you'll have a long wait for another total lunar eclipse over Los Angeles. While smaller penumbral and partial lunar eclipses will occur before then, the next total lunar eclipse visible from Los Angeles will not be until June 25, 2029. If the skies cooperate, just look toward the southeastern sky Thursday evening for one of the most impressive lunar eclipses visible from Los Angeles in years.

Downtown Los Angeles Ties Heat Record As Heat Wave continues Downtown Los Angeles reached 98 degrees Wednesday afternoon, tying the daily record for August 26 set back in 1981, according to the National Weather Service. The temperature peaked around 4 p.m. The 98-degree reading was 13 degrees above the normal high of 85 degrees for this time of year, as Southern California experienced what forecasters called the hottest day of the current heat wave. The heat isn't finished yet. Downtown L.A. is expected to remain near the upper 90s Thursday and Friday before temperatures finally begin dropping over the weekend.

Los Angeles Wants 1,700 Extra Buses For 2028 Olympics With the 2028 Olympics now less than two years away, Los Angeles officials say they need $2 billion in federal transportation funding to keep millions of visitors moving around Southern California during the Games. A major part of the plan calls for bringing in approximately 1,700 additional buses, on top of Metro's existing fleet. Officials are also planning special traffic lanes and pedestrian improvements to help athletes, officials and spectators reach venues without overwhelming L.A.'s already-busy roads and freeways. Five Los Angeles-area members of Congress met with transportation officials in West Hollywood Wednesday, warning that time is running out to secure the money needed to put the massive transportation plan in place. For Angelenos wondering what traffic will look like during the Olympics, officials are making one thing clear: getting people out of their cars and onto buses and trains will be a major part of the plan.

DHL Cargo Plane Catches Fire After Landing At LAX A DHL cargo plane experienced a frightening landing at Los Angeles International Airport late Wednesday night after its landing gear area caught fire. The Boeing 737-800 cargo aircraft had arrived at LAX from Phoenix when flames were seen coming from the left side of the plane at approximately 11:10 p.m. Video from the scene showed sparks and flames around the rear landing gear, with at least two tires appearing severely damaged. Airport firefighters quickly responded on LAX's southern runway complex, just west of the Sepulveda Tunnel, and brought the fire under control. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The exact cause remains under investigation, although initial reports indicate the incident may have involved a problem with the aircraft's braking system.

Humidity is elevated across Los Angeles Thursday morning, with Downtown L.A. sitting around 64% humidity shortly after 5 a.m. and a dew point of 66 degrees — making for a noticeably muggy start to the day. One reason for the extra humidity is the much warmer-than-normal ocean temperatures off the Southern California coast. The unusually warm Pacific waters are adding more moisture to the atmosphere, contributing to the muggy conditions across the Los Angeles Basin. There is some good news when it comes to the heat. Downtown Los Angeles is now forecast to reach around 96 degrees today, a few degrees cooler than earlier forecasts that had Downtown approaching 100 degrees.

Tree Falls Onto Home On Alta Vista Boulevard A large tree fell onto a home on the 100 block of North Alta Vista Boulevard Thursday, causing damage to the property. The incident comes amid concerns from residents about a number of eucalyptus trees throughout the neighborhood that they believe have become dangerous. Eucalyptus trees can be prone to dropping large limbs or toppling, particularly when weakened or under certain weather and soil conditions. Neighbors have expressed concern that additional trees could pose a danger to homes, vehicles and pedestrians and are hoping potentially hazardous trees in the area will be inspected. There are currently no reports of injuries from Thursday’s incident. The extent of the damage to the home is not immediately known.

The alert states that Jax is missing and believed to be in imminent danger. Additional details regarding the child's description, the circumstances of the disappearance, and any possible suspect or vehicle were not included in the initial wireless message. CHP says AMBER Alerts are reserved for child-abduction cases in which authorities believe the child faces imminent danger of serious injury or death.

Natural Gas Leak Reported Near Beverly Boulevard And Mansfield Emergency crews are responding Friday afternoon just after 12PM to a reported natural gas leak near Beverly Boulevard and North Mansfield Avenue. Early Morning Structure Fire Breaks Out Near Romaine And Vine In Hollywood Los Angeles firefighters responded to an early morning structure fire Sunday on Romaine Street, just east of Vine Street. The fire was reported near Romaine Street and El Centro Avenue, prompting a large LAFD response with numerous engines, trucks and rescue ambulances sent to the scene. Fire crews were working at the building early Sunday morning. Drivers should use caution around Romaine Street in the area while emergency crews remain on scene.

El Al Heading To San Francisco — United Will Already Have Competition When It Returns The competition for nonstop flights between Israel and the West Coast is heating up. El Al is scheduled to begin nonstop service between Tel Aviv and San Francisco on October 25, operating three times a week. That gives El Al several months on the route before United Airlines resumes its own nonstop SFO–Tel Aviv service on March 28, 2027. That means when United returns to the route in March, it won't have San Francisco–Israel nonstop service to itself. Travelers will already have El Al as another nonstop option. For Los Angeles travelers heading to Israel, the SFO flights could actually be a better option than connecting through Newark, despite more total time in the air. As LA SCOOP previously pointed out, Newark can be quicker overall. But flying United from Hollywood Burbank Airport to SFO and then continuing on United to Tel Aviv changes the equation considerably. Travelers can stay on the same airline while avoiding the traffic, long lines and massive terminals at LAX. For Valley residents, the convenience is especially significant. Hollywood Burbank Airport can be as little as 10 minutes from Valley Village, making it an extremely easy starting point for a trip to Israel. Burbank can also faster to get to than LAX from Hancock Park. Even for Pico-Robertson residents, where Burbank is farther away, avoiding the congestion and long lines at LAX could make the SFO connection attractive. The bigger question for Southern California remains the same: When will another airline like United or Delta finally compete with El Al on nonstop LAX–Tel Aviv service?

Metal Debris Flattens Tires On 12 Cars On 405 Freeway In Encino A bizarre incident caused major delays on the southbound 405 Freeway near Mulholland Drive this morning after metal debris in the roadway flattened tires on multiple vehicles. 405 Freeway Overnight Closures Begin Tonight — Here Are The Details Drivers traveling through the Sepulveda Pass should expect significant overnight delays beginning tonight, Monday, August 31, as Caltrans continues its major I-405 paving project. Closures are scheduled nightly from approximately 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday morning, September 4. NORTHBOUND 405: Up to three lanes closed between Sepulveda Boulevard and Victory Boulevard. The Getty Center Drive off-ramp will also be closed. SOUTHBOUND 405: Up to four lanes closed between the 101 Freeway and Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive. Man Killed In Late-Night Beverly Hills Altercation A man was killed following an altercation in a Beverly Hills alley late Sunday night, in what police say appears to have been an isolated incident. Beverly Hills Police responded at approximately 11:39 p.m. Sunday to the alley behind the 400 block of North Palm Drive, in the residential Flats area. Officers found one man suffering from a wound to his neck. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later died. A second man involved in the altercation, described by police as a Beverly Hills resident, was also injured and transported to a hospital for treatment. BHPD detectives are investigating what led to the deadly confrontation. The identities of the two men have not yet been released.

Major Downtown LA Street Closures Begin Near Convention Center Drivers heading through Downtown Los Angeles should expect delays as daytime closures begin on Venice Boulevard near the Los Angeles Convention Center. Westbound Venice Boulevard will be closed between the 110 Freeway/Convention Center Drive and Figueroa Street from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. The closures are connected to work on the massive $2.6 billion expansion and modernization of the Convention Center. Drivers will be detoured through Figueroa Street and Olympic Boulevard. LA County Sues State Farm Over Palisades And Eaton Fire Claims Los Angeles County filed a lawsuit Monday against State Farm, accusing the insurance giant of mishandling claims from homeowners affected by the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires. Rams Owner Agrees To Buy Los Angeles Angels In $4 Billion Deal The Los Angeles Angels are getting a new owner, with Rams owner Stan Kroenke reaching a deal to purchase the baseball franchise from longtime owner Arte Moreno for a reported $4 billion. The massive price would make it the largest sale in MLB history. Moreno purchased the Angels for just $183.5 million in 2003. Kroenke already owns the Los Angeles Rams, along with the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Arsenal and other major sports properties. The Angels deal is expected to close in early 2027, pending MLB approval. The sale marks the end of Moreno’s 23-year run as controlling owner and could bring major changes to the Angels, who have not won a playoff game since 2009.

Car Fire Spreads To Brush Along 2 Freeway — SigAlert Issued A vehicle fire along the northbound 2 Freeway near Colorado Boulevard spread into nearby hillside brush Tuesday night, prompting a major fire response. All northbound lanes were blocked as firefighters battled the flames, and a SigAlert was issued shortly after 9 p.m. because of the closure. Fire crews worked to keep the flames from spreading farther into the hillside and toward nearby homes. Drivers were urged to avoid the northbound 2 through the area while crews worked at the scene.

EARLY MORNING EARTHQUAKE SHAKES SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ONTARIO — A magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck the Inland Empire early Wednesday morning, with shaking reported across parts of Southern California. The quake hit at approximately 5:37 a.m., about four miles southeast of Ontario. Residents reported feeling it as far away as Irvine, Anaheim, Riverside, San Bernardino and West Covina. Lomita Man Charged With Threatening To Shoot Up Jewish Community Center A 43-year-old Lomita man has been charged with felony hate crimes after allegedly threatening to shoot up the Jewish Community Center in Redondo Beach, including making threats involving children. Prosecutors say Paul Dean Andrews repeatedly called the JCC in August, making antisemitic statements and allegedly telling an executive, “I know where you guys are. I know you are on Vail Avenue... I am going to come up and shoot up the place.” According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Andrews had previously been granted diversion in a gun-related case and ordered to complete an anti-bias program through the Museum of Tolerance. Instead, prosecutors allege he later called the museum and a local Jewish temple and made antisemitic threats. Andrews pleaded not guilty and is being held on $275,000 bail. If convicted as charged, he faces up to nine years and four months in state prison.

4 Killed, 2 Critically Injured After Car Plunges Off Mountain Road Near Wrightwood Four people were killed and two others critically injured after a vehicle went off Angeles Crest Highway near Wrightwood early Friday morning. The single-vehicle crash happened around 1:40 a.m. near Highway 2 and Flume Canyon Road, close to the Los Angeles–San Bernardino County line. Authorities say five people were ejected from the vehicle, while a sixth was able to get out on their own. Emergency crews faced difficult terrain and reportedly used about 40 feet of cable to reach the victims. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, while two survivors were airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition. CHP is investigating what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. Initial reports indicate it may have struck a pole before rolling off the road and into a meadow below.
