Metal Debris Flattens Tires On 12 Cars On 405 Freeway In Encino A bizarre incident caused major delays on the southbound 405 Freeway near Mulholland Drive this morning after metal debris in the roadway flattened tires on multiple vehicles. The incident was reported around 5:30 a.m., with the CHP saying a total of 12 vehicles suffered at least one flat tire. Cars were seen lined up along the shoulder waiting for assistance. Only one lane was reportedly closed, but the incident caused heavy traffic through the Sepulveda Pass during the morning commute.

405 Freeway Overnight Closures Begin Tonight — Here Are The Details Drivers traveling through the Sepulveda Pass should expect significant overnight delays beginning tonight, Monday, August 31, as Caltrans continues its major I-405 paving project. Closures are scheduled nightly from approximately 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday morning, September 4. NORTHBOUND 405: Up to three lanes closed between Sepulveda Boulevard and Victory Boulevard. The Getty Center Drive off-ramp will also be closed. SOUTHBOUND 405: Up to four lanes closed between the 101 Freeway and Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive. The following ramps are also scheduled to close: • Sepulveda Boulevard on-ramp to southbound 405 • Southbound 405 off-ramp to Sepulveda Boulevard • Ventura Boulevard on-ramp to southbound 405 • Southbound 405 off-ramp to Ventura Boulevard 405/101 CONNECTORS: The northbound 405 connectors to both northbound and southbound 101 will be closed. The southbound 101 connector to northbound 405 will also be closed. The work is part of Caltrans' $143.7 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project between Van Nuys and Westwood. Drivers traveling between the Valley and Westside late at night should expect delays and consider alternate routes.

Man Killed In Late-Night Beverly Hills Altercation A man was killed following an altercation in a Beverly Hills alley late Sunday night, in what police say appears to have been an isolated incident. Beverly Hills Police responded at approximately 11:39 p.m. Sunday to the alley behind the 400 block of North Palm Drive, in the residential Flats area. Officers found one man suffering from a wound to his neck. He was rushed to a hospital, where he later died. A second man involved in the altercation, described by police as a Beverly Hills resident, was also injured and transported to a hospital for treatment. BHPD detectives are investigating what led to the deadly confrontation. The identities of the two men have not yet been released.

Major Downtown LA Street Closures Begin Near Convention Center Drivers heading through Downtown Los Angeles should expect delays as daytime closures begin on Venice Boulevard near the Los Angeles Convention Center. Westbound Venice Boulevard will be closed between the 110 Freeway/Convention Center Drive and Figueroa Street from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Crews are now working to remove remaining debris and clean and disinfect the facility. The overall cleanup is expected to cost more than $100 million. Rams Owner Agrees To Buy Los Angeles Angels In $4 Billion Deal The Los Angeles Angels are getting a new owner, with Rams owner Stan Kroenke reaching a deal to purchase the baseball franchise from longtime owner Arte Moreno for a reported $4 billion. The massive price would make it the largest sale in MLB history. Moreno purchased the Angels for just $183.5 million in 2003. Kroenke already owns the Los Angeles Rams, along with the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Arsenal and other major sports properties. The Angels deal is expected to close in early 2027, pending MLB approval. The sale marks the end of Moreno’s 23-year run as controlling owner and could bring major changes to the Angels, who have not won a playoff game since 2009.

Car Fire Spreads To Brush Along 2 Freeway — SigAlert Issued A vehicle fire along the northbound 2 Freeway near Colorado Boulevard spread into nearby hillside brush Tuesday night, prompting a major fire response. All northbound lanes were blocked as firefighters battled the flames, and a SigAlert was issued shortly after 9 p.m. because of the closure. Fire crews worked to keep the flames from spreading farther into the hillside and toward nearby homes. Drivers were urged to avoid the northbound 2 through the area while crews worked at the scene.

EARLY MORNING EARTHQUAKE SHAKES SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ONTARIO — A magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck the Inland Empire early Wednesday morning, with shaking reported across parts of Southern California. The quake hit at approximately 5:37 a.m., about four miles southeast of Ontario. Residents reported feeling it as far away as Irvine, Anaheim, Riverside, San Bernardino and West Covina. LA Relaxes Parking Enforcement For Upcoming Yomim Tovim The Los Angeles Department of Transportation will relax certain parking restrictions in many Jewish neighborhoods during the upcoming Yomim Tovim. Lomita Man Charged With Threatening To Shoot Up Jewish Community Center A 43-year-old Lomita man has been charged with felony hate crimes after allegedly threatening to shoot up the Jewish Community Center in Redondo Beach, including making threats involving children. Prosecutors say Paul Dean Andrews repeatedly called the JCC in August, making antisemitic statements and allegedly telling an executive, “I know where you guys are. I know you are on Vail Avenue... I am going to come up and shoot up the place.” According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Andrews had previously been granted diversion in a gun-related case and ordered to complete an anti-bias program through the Museum of Tolerance. Instead, prosecutors allege he later called the museum and a local Jewish temple and made antisemitic threats. Andrews pleaded not guilty and is being held on $275,000 bail. If convicted as charged, he faces up to nine years and four months in state prison.

4 Killed, 2 Critically Injured After Car Plunges Off Mountain Road Near Wrightwood Four people were killed and two others critically injured after a vehicle went off Angeles Crest Highway near Wrightwood early Friday morning. The single-vehicle crash happened around 1:40 a.m. near Highway 2 and Flume Canyon Road, close to the Los Angeles–San Bernardino County line. Authorities say five people were ejected from the vehicle, while a sixth was able to get out on their own. Emergency crews faced difficult terrain and reportedly used about 40 feet of cable to reach the victims. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, while two survivors were airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition. CHP is investigating what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. Initial reports indicate it may have struck a pole before rolling off the road and into a meadow below.

LA Wakes Up To Rain As Tropical Moisture Moves In Many Los Angeles residents are waking up to rainfall Sunday morning, an unusual sight for early September. The rain is being fueled by tropical moisture from Hurricane Marie, which remains well offshore but is sending moisture into Southern California. The National Weather Service says showers are likely throughout the morning, with a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. Some areas could receive between a tenth and quarter-inch of rain, with locally higher amounts possible under thunderstorms. Drivers should use extra caution, as roads can become especially slick after months without significant rainfall. Temperatures will also stay relatively mild, with Los Angeles expected to reach only around 79 degrees today.

RAIN CAUSES WAVE OF SPINOUTS AND CRASHES ACROSS L.A. FREEWAYS Today's rain caused problems across Los Angeles freeways, with numerous spinouts and crashes reported as roads became slick. Incidents were reported on the 405, 101, 110, 118 and 210 freeways, among others. The rain is expected to taper off this evening, with most of Los Angeles drying out around 8 p.m. A slight chance of rain remains through 11 p.m., before skies clear overnight. Drivers should continue using extra caution even after the rain stops, particularly where standing water remains.

MALIBU BEACHES EVACUATED AS LIGHTNING MOVES INTO THE AREA Lifeguards are evacuating beachgoers from Malibu beaches Sunday afternoon due to lightning and thunderstorms moving through the area. Beachgoers are being told to get out of the water and seek shelter as the storm passes. The National Weather Service says thunderstorms are possible along the Malibu coast this afternoon. The lightning threat comes as Malibu is already dealing with unusually dangerous ocean conditions, including high surf, powerful rip currents and possible coastal flooding. Waves could reach up to 12 feet in some locations.

LABOR DAY REMINDER: TRASH COLLECTION DELAYED — PARKING ENFORCEMENT RELAXED MONDAY With Labor Day tomorrow, Monday, September 7, Los Angeles residents should be aware of changes to trash collection and parking enforcement. There will be no City of Los Angeles trash collection Monday. Collections will instead be pushed back one day for the remainder of the week — Monday routes will be collected Tuesday, Tuesday routes Wednesday, Wednesday routes Thursday, Thursday routes Friday and Friday routes Shabbos. That means residents in Hancock Park east of La Brea whose normal collection is Friday will have their trash picked up Shabbos morning. Its probably best for those residents to remember to put out the trash bins on Friday before Shabbos. Parking enforcement will also be relaxed Monday for Labor Day. Street-sweeping restrictions, parking meters, posted time limits and certain timed No Parking/No Stopping restrictions will not be enforced, unless signs specifically state that holidays are enforced. OVERNIGHT BIG RIG CRASH STILL CAUSING PROBLEMS ON 210 FREEWAY A major overnight big-rig crash continues to impact traffic on the 210 Freeway in Claremont Monday morning. The crash happened at approximately 12:44 a.m. on the eastbound 210 just west of Baseline Road, when a big rig overturned and went across the center divider. Debris was reportedly scattered across the freeway, and diesel fuel spilled onto both sides of the roadway. The wreckage blocked the eastbound carpool lane and two left lanes, along with the westbound carpool lane. CHP issued a SigAlert, and the affected lanes were expected to remain closed until further notice. The truck driver was taken to a hospital with injuries. A black sedan was also reported overturned on the eastbound side, although it remains unclear how it was involved. Drivers traveling through Claremont should expect delays while crews work to clear the wreckage and diesel spill.

BODY FOUND IN BALLONA CREEK NEAR PLAYA DEL REY A man's body was found floating in Ballona Creek Monday morning near Lincoln and Culver boulevards, close to the Ballona Creek bike path. The discovery was reported around 8:44 a.m. Authorities are investigating the man's identity and cause of death. The body was found near Playa del Rey, one of Los Angeles' most expensive coastal communities, where homes can sell for millions of dollars.

Fire Department Training Slows Traffic Near Magnolia & Whitsett in Valley Village Fire department crews appear to be conducting a training exercise along Magnolia Boulevard just east of Whitsett Avenue this afternoon. Several fire trucks are occupying traffic lanes on the eastbound side, forcing cars to carefully maneuver around the emergency vehicles. HIGH SURF CAUSES MALIBU DRIVEWAYS TO COLLAPSE Powerful surf and coastal erosion caused two driveways at beachfront homes in Malibu to collapse early Tuesday morning, leaving large holes along Sea Level Drive near Point Lechuza. Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the 31600 block of Sea Level Drive at approximately 5:45 a.m. One of the collapses damaged a gas line, prompting Southern California Gas crews to shut it off. West Hollywood’s “Coyote Condos” Cleared — But Coyotes Are Still Roaming Neighborhood A pack of coyotes that took over an unfinished condo development in West Hollywood has finally been removed from the property — but neighbors say the animals are still roaming nearby streets. The abandoned construction site at Spaulding Avenue and Romaine Street had become known as the “Coyote Condos” after two adult coyotes and three pups moved into the property. A pest-control company spent several weeks using cameras and deterrents to encourage the coyotes to leave without trapping them. Food and water sources attracting the animals were also removed. The coyotes appear to have left the construction site, but residents say they continue to see them around the neighborhood — including a young coyote spotted this morning.

Trial Begins In Deadly Baldwin Hills Crash More than four years after the horrific Baldwin Hills crash that killed six people, the murder trial of Nicole Linton began today in Los Angeles. The crash happened August 4, 2022, at La Brea and Slauson avenues. Prosecutors allege Linton was driving about 130 mph when she sped through the intersection, triggering the fiery multi-vehicle collision. Among those killed were a pregnant 23-year-old woman, her unborn baby, her 11-month-old son and her boyfriend. Linton has pleaded not guilty to six counts of murder and five counts of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

Clinton Street Closed For Repaving again Today Drivers in the Hancock Park area should be aware that Clinton Street is closed west of Formosa Avenue today due to repaving work. Expect delays in the immediate area and use alternate streets if possible, especially during school and carpool traffic.

Karen Bass Leaving Homelessness Board As Federal Scrutiny Intensifies Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is stepping down from the LAHSA Commission, the powerful board overseeing the region’s homeless services agency, saying she no longer has enough time to serve. The move comes as LAHSA faces increasing federal scrutiny over allegations of waste, mismanagement and possible misuse of taxpayer money. Bass’ attendance has also drawn criticism. An LAist review found she missed 25 of 47 commission meetings since appointing herself to the board in 2023 — including 13 of 21 meetings over the past year. Her office says she remained informed through her other appointees. Congress has now scheduled a September 15 hearing examining federally funded homelessness programs, with Los Angeles a major focus. Bass was asked to testify but says she is unavailable that day. Federal lawmakers have also requested records involving LAHSA funding and contracting. The federal inquiry does not establish that Bass personally committed fraud, but the timing puts additional attention on how Los Angeles has spent billions addressing homelessness and what results taxpayers have received.

Brush Fire Burning Along 405 Near Getty Center A brush fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in the hills alongside the 405 Freeway near the Getty Center, sending smoke into the Sepulveda Pass area. The fire was reported shortly after 4:15 p.m., burning above the northbound 405. Firefighters are actively battling the flames in heavy vegetation. As of the latest update, no injuries have been reported, and it remains unclear whether any structures are threatened. The cause is not yet known. Major Firefighter Response Along 405 Near Getty Center — Avoid The 405 A major firefighting response is underway along the 405 Freeway near Getty Center Drive after a brush fire broke out shortly after 4:15 p.m. Wednesday. The fire has burned about five acres, with numerous additional fire engines requested and water-dropping aircraft attacking the flames from above. Smoke is spreading across the Sepulveda Pass. Drivers should avoid the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass if possible as the emergency response may cause significant delays. Benedict Canyon can be a good alternate route between the Valley and Westside, depending on your destination and traffic conditions.

Downtown LA Ties Record At 105° As Valley Bakes Los Angeles endured another scorcher Wednesday, with Downtown LA reaching 105 degrees — tying the September 9 record set in 2024. The normal high for the date is just 84 degrees. The Valley was even hotter. Burbank hit 106 degrees, while Van Nuys Airport reached 107 degrees, with some local readings around Van Nuys hitting 108. The good news: a cooling trend is expected heading into Friday and Shabbos. Just in time for a cool down over Rosh Hashana.
