Cedars-Sinai Launches New Center to Develop Robots That Can Perform Surgery on Their Own Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles announced today, October 12, the launch of a groundbreaking Center for Autonomous Robotic Surgery, aimed at developing AI-powered robots capable of independently performing certain surgical tasks. Unlike today's surgical robots, which are controlled by doctors, the new technology could allow robots to recognize human anatomy, make precise movements and carry out portions of surgery automatically. The center will be led by Dr. Andrew Hung and robotics expert Dr. Michael Yip, with the goal of making surgery safer, more precise and accessible to more patients. Doctors will remain in charge, and the technology is still under development. However, this could represent a major step toward a future in which robots perform significant portions of surgical procedures with minimal human intervention.

1:57 AMSouthern California Edison Warns of Possible Power Shutoffs in Malibu Ahead of Powerful Santa Ana Winds Southern California Edison is preparing for possible power shutoffs in parts of Malibu beginning Thursday, October 15, at midnight, as powerful Santa Ana winds threaten to create dangerous wildfire conditions. The precautionary shutoffs could affect homes in central and western Malibu. The goal is to prevent downed power lines or damaged electrical equipment from sparking wildfires during the windstorm. Wind gusts could reach 70 mph in mountain areas, with temperatures climbing into the 90s Thursday and Friday, creating conditions where fires could spread rapidly. Officials warn that electricity could remain off for eight hours or longer after winds subside, as crews must inspect power lines before restoring service. Residents are urged to charge devices, prepare emergency supplies and be ready for possible evacuations. The shutoffs are not yet confirmed. Edison will notify affected customers as conditions develop.

7:34 PMPatient Raises Concerns Over Anti-Israel Messaging Inside UCLA Emergency Room A patient seeking medical care at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood reportedly expressed shock after encountering pro-Palestinian messaging inside the emergency department. A photograph circulating online shows a water bottle at a workstation displaying a sticker reading “Bombing Kids Is Not Self Defense,” alongside Palestinian imagery. The patient also reported seeing a nurse wearing a keffiyeh-patterned scrunchie. The incident has raised concerns about political messaging in hospital treatment areas, particularly for Jewish and Israeli patients who may feel uncomfortable or unwelcome while seeking medical care. UCLA Health's official patient-rights policy promises respectful treatment regardless of religion or national origin, including respect for patients' cultural and spiritual beliefs. It remains unclear whether UCLA has responded to this report.

1:21 AMWest Hollywood May Scrap Bike Lanes to Preserve Parking on Fountain Avenue West Hollywood City Council is considering major changes to its controversial Fountain Avenue redesign, potentially eliminating planned protected bike lanes to preserve existing street parking. The current plan would eliminate approximately 210 parking spaces, nearly 60% of existing parking along the affected stretch of Fountain Avenue. Councilmember Lauren Meister has introduced a proposal scheduled for Monday, October 19, that would direct city staff to explore an alternative design while maintaining pedestrian safety improvements and measures to slow traffic. However, changing the project could put $4.6 million in state grant funding at risk. The proposal could be welcome news for residents and businesses concerned about losing parking spaces along Fountain Avenue. No final decision has been made. The council will consider whether to have city staff study the alternative before moving forward.

4:17 AMOutrage Across Los Angeles Over Skyrocketing LADWP Bills Los Angeles residents are furious over soaring LADWP electricity bills, with some households receiving charges in the thousands. Canter’s Deli on Fairfax reportedly saw its bill jump from approximately $24,400 to $35,700 in just a few months. One major reason is LADWP’s tiered pricing system. In the tiered pricing system, the more electricity used, the higher the pricing is on additional electricity used passed each tier mark. During heat waves, air conditioners run longer, pushing customers into higher tiers. They end up paying not only for more electricity but also higher rates on the additional usage. More than 24,000 people have reportedly signed a petition demanding an investigation, while LA City Controller Kenneth Mejia is examining the complaints.

12:47 AMLAX People Mover Debacle: Never-Ending Delays, Terrible Mismanagement, and Now Electrical Blasts Damage the Tracks! The never-ending LAX People Mover debacle has taken another troubling turn. Reports indicate that three electrical blast incidents damaged sections of the elevated tracks and power rail, creating yet another setback for the long-delayed project. Originally scheduled to open in 2023, the $3.3 billion project has suffered years of delays, technical problems, contractor disputes and serious questions about mismanagement and oversight. The latest scheduled opening is January 2027, but additional setbacks have raised concerns that passengers may not see the trains operating until well into 2027, or possibly even 2028, although no such postponement has been officially announced. What was supposed to revolutionize transportation at LAX has instead become a symbol of never-ending delays, ballooning costs and taxpayer frustration.
1:56 AMFBI ARRESTS LOS ANGELES MAN ACCUSED OF PLOTTING MASS-CASUALTY ATTACK ON JEWISH PRESCHOOL The FBI has arrested Steven Carlos Duenas, 51, accused of plotting a deadly attack against JEMS Preschool, a Chabad-affiliated Jewish preschool in Los Feliz serving children as young as 18 months old. Duenas was arrested October 2 after investigators uncovered disturbing antisemitic social media posts, including threats to bomb the preschool and statements that not enough synagogues had been burned down. He also expressed support for the Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist group. During a search of his home, FBI agents reportedly discovered a gasoline-filled glass bottle and materials believed to be intended for making Molotov cocktails. Federal prosecutors described the alleged plot as a potential mass-casualty incident targeting the Jewish community. Duenas faces federal charges and is scheduled to return to court November 10. The disturbing case highlights growing concerns over antisemitic threats against Jewish institutions and the safety of young children in Los Angeles.

The fire forced lane closures and caused major traffic backups during the morning rush hour. The cause remains under investigation.

A total of 28 people have been federally charged. The suspects are lawful permanent residents, commonly known as green card holders, who prosecutors allege illegally registered to vote, with many accused of actually casting ballots in previous elections. The arrests come after the Trump administration identified more than 20,000 registered California voters it suspects are noncitizens and filed a lawsuit seeking to prevent their ballots from being counted in the November 3 election.

8:11 PMSkyrocketing LADWP Bills Become Major Issue in Los Angeles Mayoral Race Outrage over skyrocketing Department of Water and Power bills is now spilling into the Los Angeles mayoral race, with residents reporting bills doubling or tripling following the summer heat waves. Mayoral challenger Nithya Raman is accusing Mayor Karen Bass's administration of allowing hidden rate increases through DWP adjustment charges, claiming these now account for more than two-thirds of electricity costs. Bass's office disputes the criticism, pointing out that Raman herself voted for increases last year. LADWP blames extreme heat and increased air-conditioning use, which pushes customers into more expensive billing tiers. However, critics point to rising electricity rates as another major factor. As LA Scoop reported yesterday, City Controller Kenneth Mejia has promised an investigation as the issue becomes a growing political headache ahead of November's mayoral election.

1:51 PMMayor Bass Announces Emergency Relief for LADWP Customers Following Outrage Over Skyrocketing Bills Mayor Karen Bass announced Tuesday that LADWP customers struggling with unusually high utility bills can pay what they can afford for now, following widespread outrage over bills that have doubled or even tripled for some residents. Bass has asked LADWP to suspend electricity and water shutoffs through December 31 for residential customers unable to pay. Beginning in November, customers will also receive detailed information about their electricity and water usage. The mayor is encouraging residents to enroll in payment assistance programs, including Level Pay, which spreads utility costs evenly over 12 months. While LADWP blames record summer heat and increased electricity consumption, critics are demanding answers about rising rates and the utility's expensive tiered billing system. Importantly, the relief does not eliminate or reduce existing bills — it provides temporary protection from shutoffs and additional payment options.
7:59 PMIconic Santa Monica Pier Sign Being Removed for Restoration The famous Santa Monica Pier entrance sign, one of Southern California’s most recognizable landmarks, is being removed beginning today, October 20, and is expected to remain gone until mid-to-late 2027, approximately 12 to 14 months. The removal is part of a $35 million project to replace the aging bridge connecting Ocean Avenue to the Pier. The restored sign will be reinstalled once bridge construction is completed. The Santa Monica Pier will remain open throughout construction, and a smaller replica sign has been installed for visitors to photograph.
