Mayor Olivia Chow has opted out of a major mayoral debate focused specifically on antisemitism, hate and public safety — and her explanation is raising eyebrows. The Sept. 8 debate, organized by Jewish Lawyers of Canada, has been in the works for weeks. The organization says it had been communicating with Chow’s team since Aug. 7 — and that her campaign never raised a scheduling problem connected to her campaign launch. Now, Chow’s team says she won’t attend because her official re-election campaign launches on Sept. 9 — literally one day later. Meanwhile, her opponents Brad Bradford and Chris Alexander are showing up. And when the Toronto Star asked whether the involvement of moderator Jesse Brown — a vocal critic of Chow’s record on antisemitism — played a role in her decision, her spokesperson reportedly did not answer the question. Brown says he would have stepped aside if that was preventing her participation. At some point, Toronto’s Jewish community is entitled to ask a very simple question: Does our community actually matter to Mayor Chow? 🌡️❄️ CANADA’S WINTER MAY ‘TAKE A HOLIDAY’ AS MONSTER EL NIÑO BUILDS A potentially record-breaking, “supercharged” El Niño is developing, and longtime Environment Canada climatologist David Phillips says Canadians could be in for a much milder winter dominated by Pacific air rather than bitter Arctic blasts. Phillips predicts a generally “soft, open and tame” winter, with less snow in many areas — potentially good news for heating bills, but not so great for skiers and snow lovers. The UN’s World Meteorological Organization says El Niño is now nearly certain to persist through February and could become one of the strongest ever recorded. And there may be a longer-term consequence: scientists say the enormous amount of heat associated with this El Niño could help make 2027 the hottest year ever recorded globally.

🚨 ARREST IN MP SALMA ZAHID ARSON LEAVES MOHAMAD FAKIH’S ‘PRO-ISRAEL’ INSINUATION LOOKING RECKLESSLY WRONG When vehicles outside Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s Scarborough home were torched last month, pro-Palestinian activist Mohamad Fakih quickly pointed toward pro-Israel advocacy groups. “Regardless of who committed this attack,” Fakih wrote, “we cannot ignore the climate of hostility” surrounding Zahid. He specifically accused pro-Israel groups of publicly attacking and amplifying “damaging narratives” about Zahid and others who speak against Israel, before declaring: “Hate fuels these consequences.” Now Toronto Police have arrested 24-year-old Roshvin Crofton, who faces five charges in connection with the August 27 arson, while investigators continue searching for a second suspect. Crofton has no publicly reported connection to the Jewish community, Israel advocacy or any pro-Israel organization. An individual bearing the same name and matching Crofton’s age has previously faced serious criminal charges involving stolen vehicles and, separately, an alleged armed robbery and shooting. Those cases have not been definitively confirmed to involve the same Roshvin Crofton, and should therefore not be presented as established history. But based on everything publicly known today, the arrest makes Fakih’s rush to inject Israel into the story look extraordinarily reckless — and increasingly far-fetched.

ON THIS DAY — כ"ח אלול Rav Meir Greenwald (Grunwald), the Tetcher Rov, zt”l Rav Meir Greenwald was born into one of Hungary’s distinguished rabbinic families. His father, Rav Avraham Yosef Greenwald, author of Avnei Shoham, served as Rov and Rosh Yeshiva in Ungvar, while his grandfather was Rav Moshe Greenwald, the famed Arugas Habosem of Chust. While still extraordinarily young, Rav Meir married the daughter of Rav Moshe Teitelbaum, the previous Rov of Tetch (then in Hungary and today Tiachiv, Ukraine), and was appointed to succeed him as Rov of Tetch. During the Holocaust, Rav Greenwald endured brutal forced labour in Nazi camps in Eastern Europe. He later wrote of the torture and backbreaking labour he suffered. His wife and nine children were deported to Auschwitz and murdered. After the war, Rav Greenwald settled in Toronto, where he became one of the pioneering rabbonim who helped rebuild Hungarian Torah life on Canadian soil. Known here as the Tetcher Rov, he served as Av Beis Din of Kehal Machzikei Torah and played an important role in strengthening Torah life and religious observance in the growing postwar community. Rav Greenwald also established and led Shlomei Emunei Yisroel, personally teaching talmidim in the yeshiva/cheder. The institution would eventually become today’s Yeshiva Yesodei HaTorah. Rav Greenwald remarried after the war and rebuilt his family. Among his sons-in-law were Rav Yeshaya Yaakov Portugal, zt”l, the Skulener Rebbe of Boro Park, and, yblch”t, Rav Yaakov Yechezkel Greenwald, the Pupa Rebbe of Williamsburg. The Tetcher Rov was the author of Avanim Meiros and continued the Torah legacy of his illustrious family after its transplantation from Hungary to North America. A POWERFUL MESSAGE OF GRATITUDE AT THE ISRAELI CENTRE A moving Seudas Hoda’ah was held at the Israeli Centre for Garry, who survived a horrific motorcycle accident after being struck by a car and thrown approximately 10 metres. Garry suffered multiple broken bones and serious internal injuries, spending two and a half months in hospital. Despite everything he endured, his message was simple: “Thank You, Hashem, for saving my life.” Garry spoke about learning to appreciate even the things people normally take for granted — including the ability to say Asher Yatzar — and encouraged those present to recognize the everyday miracles in their lives. As Rosh Hashanah approaches, his message resonated strongly: First say thank you. Then ask. May Garry continue to have a refuah sheleimah.
