Former NYC Comptroller and self-hating Jew Brad Lander accused Israel of "state-sponsored ethnic cleansing" after being detained during an unauthorized Palestinian olive harvest near Beitar Illit. Lander, who was released with a warning, demanded the release of dozens of other activists. The IDF said the harvest was conducted without required security coordination near an Israeli community, posing a security risk. The military emphasized that approximately 100 properly coordinated olive harvests have already taken place across Judea and Samaria without incident.

Jooish Updates

8/31/26

Moshe Grunwald: iOS-only update: Today, a new version of Jooish was released on the App Store. It adds support for Smart Speed and Voice Boost for podcasts. (Did you know Jooish now has podcasts? Check them out here: https://jooish.app/podcasts ) Smart Speed: This removes the blank space between spoken words. Some speakers take long pauses, so Smart Speed shortens them. It also tracks how much time you’ve saved. Once you’ve saved at least one minute, you’ll see it next to the menu option. This works separately from playback speed. Voice Boost: Podcasts are mostly spoken audio, which means they’re mostly people talking. However, the audio isn’t always tuned for speech and can sound much better when voices are emphasized. Voice Boost does this automatically. These features are possible because Jooish iOS now has a custom audio-processing engine. They’re currently only available on iOS. If you’d like to see them on Android, please reply privately to this message and let me know.

Is Netanyahu’s Grip on Israel Slipping? Israel votes soon in an election shaped by the Oct. 7 attacks and the war in Gaza that followed. With former general Gadi Eisenkot’s party holding a slight lead in the polls, could this be the end of Benjamin Netanyahu’s long reign as prime minister? An Eisenkot victory, however, is unlikely to signal a major shift in foreign policy, reflecting a broader rightward turn in Israeli politics. Beyond domestic policy, the outcome of the election carries significant regional stakes and could reshape Israel’s ties with other countries, including the US. The Jewish state’s longest-serving leader risks losing this month’s election, but he has reshaped Israeli politics in his

🚨Report: Venezuela Earthquake Death Toll May Be Far Higher Than Official Count, Analysis Finds - The New York Times Venezuela’s government says 6,509 people died in the devastating June earthquakes, but a New York Times investigation and U.S. Geological Survey estimates suggest the true death toll could be dramatically higher. The USGS puts its median estimate at approximately 53,000 deaths and says there is an 81% chance the actual toll exceeds 10,000. The investigation found that 16 public housing towers collapsed in the hardest-hit state of La Guaira alone. Based on apartment layouts and resident estimates, roughly 5,200 people lived in those towers, and witnesses reported that some buildings collapsed almost immediately. Satellite analysis also identified nearly 700 destroyed structures, while a Venezuelan government minister acknowledged that the damage count was far higher than the officially publicized figures. The full death toll remains uncertain. Venezuela has not conducted a rigorous national census since 2011, and officials have not disclosed how many people remain missing. Citizen-led missing-person databases list tens of thousands of names, although some entries may be duplicates or people who have since been located. 📖 CUTTING FINGERNAILS ON SHABBOS: WHAT MAKES IT A MELACHAH? When someone cuts their fingernails on Shabbos, the nail clippings are usually discarded. So what makes this an act of Gozez? Is the melachah defined by removing material from the body, even when that material has no value, or by the benefit of trimming and improving what remains? In a fascinating shiur delivered at Kollel Yeshurun, Rabbi Yehuda Gestetner explored this fundamental halachic question, examining its surprising applications to fingernails, white hairs, and even bris milah. My favorite stage of creating a painting is the finishing touches. This is where everything truly comes to life. By carefully adding highlights, shadows, and subtle contrasts, I can bring out details and create a greater sense of depth. The painting is predominantly blue, so the sky gives me an opportunity to introduce warmer oranges and purples, creating contrast and bringing the entire composition together. Chamath Palihapitiya is one of my favorite investors. What many people don’t know is that he has a fascinating connection to Israel. Chamath shared a story about his time at ICQ, when he traveled from the East Coast of the United States to Tel Aviv every quarter for two years. When he was 25, he was stepping into a leadership role and experiencing Israel’s emerging tech ecosystem firsthand. He worked alongside legendary figures like Yossi Vardi and got a front-row seat to a culture unlike any other. But one story really stood out. During one visit, Chamath went to a restaurant in Jaffa. When someone asked how he liked the food, he said he did. The response? “Oh, a bomb went off here just three days ago.” He was shaken. But what stayed with him wasn’t just the shock of that moment. It was the resilience of the Israeli people. Despite the uncertainty and the very real challenges around them, life went on. Restaurants stayed open. People gathered. Businesses operated. And entrepreneurs kept building, innovating, and moving forward. That’s the spirit of Israel. A country that doesn’t stop living, creating, or dreaming in the face of adversity. And for Chamath, witnessing that resilience firsthand left a lasting impression.

🗳️ BRADFORD PRESSES CHOW ON CITY FINANCES IN HEATED MAYORAL DEBATE With Election Day just 11 days away, Mayor Olivia Chow and challenger Brad Bradford clashed Thursday night over city finances, housing and affordability. One particularly pointed exchange came when Bradford challenged Chow to explain the difference between Toronto’s capital and operating budgets. Political commentator Jacob Citron of AccordingTo.ca, who attended the debate, said Chow struggled with the question and that Bradford dominated the second half, particularly on policy specifics. Citron also criticized Chow for suggesting Bradford's proposals could jeopardize Toronto's drinking water, calling the accusation baseless. He reported repeated cheering from Chow supporters despite warnings from moderator Steve Paikin, although Bradford supporters also occasionally interrupted.

“WE'RE JEWS IN JUDEA!” — NETANYAHU FIRES BACK AT OBAMA Former U.S. President Barack Obama has sparked controversy after declaring in Belfast that Jews seeking refuge from persecution “took land off people” and “were excessive.” He also argued that Israel had “ceded moral ground.” Prime Minister Netanyahu responded forcefully: “Our history is not a colonial enterprise. Our land is not stolen land.” The truth is, the ultimate response comes from the very first Rashi in the Torah. Rashi explains that the Torah begins with Creation so that when the nations accuse the Jewish people of stealing Eretz Yisroel, they can respond: “כל הארץ של הקדוש ברוך הוא היא, הוא בראה ונתנה לאשר ישר בעיניו.” “The entire earth belongs to Hashem. He created it and gave it to whomever He deemed appropriate.” And the historical record reinforces the Jewish people's ancient connection to the land: 📜 Rav Yehuda Halevi left Spain in the 12th century and journeyed toward Eretz Yisroel, centuries before modern Zionism. 📜 The Ramban arrived in Yerushalayim in 1267 and helped revive Jewish life. 📜 The Arizal and the great mekubalim transformed Tzefas into a world centre of Torah in the 1500s. 📜 The Or HaChaim HaKadosh, followed by the talmidim of the Baal Shem Tov and Vilna Gaon, came to Eretz Yisroel generations before modern Zionism. 📜 Sir Moses Montefiore legally purchased land outside Yerushalayim in 1855. 📜 Mark Twain, visiting in 1867, documented the Jewish population of Yerushalayim in his travel account, The Innocents Abroad. Long before 1948, long before the Holocaust, and long before modern Zionism, Jews were living in Eretz Yisroel, learning Torah and building communities. The historical record challenges any account that treats the Jewish connection to Eretz Yisroel as a modern, colonial enterprise.

🚨 TORONTO 18 TERROR PLOT RINGLEADER GRANTED FULL PAROLE Zakaria Amara, one of the masterminds behind the notorious 2006 Toronto 18 terrorist plot, has been granted full parole after authorities concluded he no longer exhibits extremist beliefs. Amara, now 41, helped organize a jihadist plot to detonate truck bombs at major Toronto targets, including the Toronto Stock Exchange, CSIS headquarters and a military base. The plot was foiled in June 2006 before the attacks could be carried out. Amara pleaded guilty and received a life sentence. After four years on supervised day parole, the Parole Board of Canada determined that he had successfully distanced himself from extremist ideology and demonstrated significant rehabilitation. 🤦‍♂️ He will now be permitted to live independently while remaining subject to conditions, including counselling, financial monitoring, restrictions on internet use and prohibitions on associating with extremists.

🚨 TRUMP ENDORSES NETANYAHU FOR RE-ELECTION — WARNS IRAN U.S. MAY “FINISH THE JOB” To the Great People of Israel: Bibi Netanyahu has been a Great Warrior Prime Minister, and an even greater Partner for Peace in combatting the Islamic Republic of Iran, with its 51 year old chant, “Death to Israel, Death to America! We will destroy the Little Satan and the Big Satan.” What Country can survive when things such as this are allowed to be said, because eventually, they always end up being true? It would have been only a question of time until Iran would have put that ominous phrase into effect, but they have been systematically destroyed, both Militarily and Financially, and unless they change their ways, rapidly, we will soon finish the job. If Israel has the wrong Leader, which would be anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this work ourselves, and I am not inclined to do so. Bibi Netanyahu has been Strong, Brave, and Brilliant in the face of tremendous opposition, including that coming from even Israel, itself. Despite all of that, he has endured and, in fact, he has thrived! I have watched Bibi under the most trying of times. Normal men or women in such situations would have wilted under the pressure — But Bibi did not wilt, he actually got stronger, and maintains that same Strength today. This is the kind of Partner that the United States of America is demanding of Israel, a Country for which it has done so much. Please let this Letter serve to represent my Complete and Total Endorsement of Bibi Netanyahu in his upcoming Race for Re-Election as Prime Minister of Israel. BIBI NETANYAHU WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN! 🚖🤖 DRIVERLESS TAXIS ARE COMING TO TORONTO — BUT IS THE CITY READY? Last Friday we reported on Waymo's plan to bring its self-driving taxis to Toronto by 2028. But the ambitious plan raises some serious questions: ❄️ Can driverless cars handle Toronto’s snowstorms, icy roads and unpredictable winter conditions? 🚦 Who gets a ticket when there's no driver? 🔒 What about passenger privacy? With cameras and sensors monitoring the ride, who has access to the recordings and personal data? ⚖️ And are Ontario's laws even ready for this technology? With City Hall weighing in and the province facing regulatory decisions, Toronto could soon find itself at the centre of a major transportation revolution. 🔎 The Toronto Scoop takes a closer look at what's coming — and whether Toronto is ready. 👉 https://www.thetorontoscoop.com/news/driverless-taxis-are-coming-to-toronto-but-is-the-city-ready

🕯️ 93RD YAHRZEIT OF RAV MEIR SHAPIRO ZT”L — THE VISIONARY WHO UNITED KLAL YISROEL THROUGH TORAH Today, 7 Cheshvan, marks the 93rd yahrtzeit of Rav Yehuda Meir Shapiro zt”l (1887–1933), the legendary Lubliner Rav, founder of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin and the driving force behind the worldwide Daf Yomi movement. Born in Shotz, Bukovina (present-day Romania), Rav Meir Shapiro displayed extraordinary brilliance from childhood, earning the title of der Shotzer Illui. He studied under his grandfather, Rav Shmuel Yitzchak Schor, the Minchas Shai, and developed a close relationship with the Chortkover Rebbe, becoming deeply rooted in the Chassidic world. His phenomenal memory, penetrating intellect and exceptional oratorical abilities quickly established him as one of the most promising young Torah personalities of his generation. 📖 A Rav, Rosh Yeshiva and Communal Leader Beginning in his twenties, Rav Meir Shapiro served as Rav in several prominent communities, including Galina, Sanok and Piotrkow, before ultimately becoming Rav of Lublin. But his influence extended far beyond the walls of the beis medrash. A gifted public speaker and fearless advocate for Yiddishkeit, he became a leading figure in Agudas Yisroel and served in the Polish parliament from 1922 to 1927, defending Jewish interests during a period of growing antisemitism. He was a rare combination of towering talmid chacham, dynamic communal leader, gifted organizer and visionary builder. 🌍 The Revolutionary Idea of Daf Yomi In 1923, at the first Knessiah Gedolah of Agudas Yisroel in Vienna, Rav Meir Shapiro presented an extraordinary proposal: Jews throughout the world would learn the same daf of Gemara each day, completing Shas together every seven and a half years. He envisioned a Jew in one country being able to travel halfway around the world, enter a beis medrash and immediately join fellow Jews learning the very same daf. The first Daf Yomi cycle began on Rosh Hashanah 5684 (1923). More than a century later, his vision continues to unite Jews across continents, communities and generations. 🏛️ A Palace for Torah Rav Meir Shapiro's other monumental achievement was the establishment of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin, which opened in 1930. At a time when many yeshiva bochurim endured difficult living conditions, he envisioned a magnificent institution where Torah scholars would be treated with the dignity befitting their calling. The imposing building included spacious study halls, a major Torah library and residential facilities for its talmidim. His message was unmistakable: Torah deserved nothing less than the finest. 💔 A Life Cut Tragically Short On 7 Cheshvan 5694 (1933), Rav Meir Shapiro passed away following a brief illness. He was only 46 years old. His sudden petirah sent shockwaves throughout Jewish communities in Poland and beyond. He and his Rebbetzin, Malka Tova, had no children of their own. Yet his spiritual legacy would become immeasurable. In 1958, his remains were transferred from Lublin to Har Hamenuchos in Yerushalayim.

Did you sell a business in 2026? Did you sell some investment real estate in 2026? Did you sell an appreciated securities portfolio 2026? Congratulations! You had a big pay day. But it was also the year of a big tax bill. The GREAT news is that it's also the year you can make your biggest charitable donations to mitigate the taxes and get the donation back to your family! So don't send the tax bill to Ottawa. Let us show you how other families have turned the entire tax bill into a charitable legacy, and found a way to replace the donation back their family, using tax-exempt life insurance for pennies on the dollar or using a cash-flow neutral financing strategy. But this has to be done before Dec 31, 2026 so the runway is short. And consider this now if next year you might have a big exit or liquidity event. Reach out and let us share what other families are doing to preserve family money, or to turn taxes into charity. There is never a meter running or obligation to have a chat. Less Tax. 🎉 RABBI YITZCHOK DOVID GROSSMAN HONOURED AT SPECIAL TORONTO GALA An inspiring evening was held last night at Chabad on Bayview, celebrating Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Grossman's 80th birthday and 55 years of devoted leadership and transforming lives. The gala brought together supporters, alumni, and community members to celebrate the extraordinary impact of Rabbi Grossman's life's work, particularly through his Migdal Ohr institutions in Israel. Earlier in the day, Rabbi Grossman participated in a special Lead, Light and Learn gathering with students from three local yeshivos: Yeshivat Or Chaim, Nefesh Dovid, and Yeshivat Keser Yosef. One of the evening's most moving moments featured a panel of three young men, including two graduates of Migdal Ohr's Zoharim program, who shared their personal journeys of overcoming troubled childhoods, substance abuse, and adversity to rebuild their lives. The celebration concluded with an energetic performance by Jewish recording artist Nissim Black, capping off a memorable evening honouring a lifetime dedicated to helping others. 🇨🇦 FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SOFTENS STANCE ON ANTI-ZIONISM FOLLOWING MUSLIM GROUP'S COMPLAINT The federal government is facing questions over its position on anti-Zionism after Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree qualified an earlier government statement linking anti-Zionism to antisemitism. On September 24, Public Safety Canada published a report describing anti-Zionism as “a contemporary manifestation of antisemitism.” The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) subsequently objected to the government's characterization. In an October 16 letter responding to the NCCM, Anandasangaree adopted more qualified language, stating that denying Jewish people the right to self-determination “may, depending on the context, be considered a manifestation of antisemitism.” He further clarified that criticism of Zionism, Israeli government policies or Israel itself should not automatically be considered antisemitic. Scoop2Cents: the times we live in are confusing. Considering that "Zionism" means different things to different people, the same follows for "anti-Zionism." As religious Jews, we are far less concerned with our "rights" than we are with our responsibilities. Separately, the Satmar Rebbe and the leaders of Agudas Yisroel opposed ideologies referred to as "Zionism," yet they were most definitely not antisemitic. However, antisemites, who hold Israel to a different standard than any other country solely due to its Jewish identity, most definitely are.

An illuminating look at how the precise definition of a melachah can have far-reaching halachic implications. 📖 Read the full article on The Toronto Scoop: https://www.thetorontoscoop.com/news/cutting-fingernail-shabbos-melachah-gozez
