NITHYA RAMAN REMOVED AS CHAIR OF HOMELESSNESS COMMITTEE AMID MAYORAL RACE Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman is being removed from her role as chair of the City Council’s Housing and Homelessness Committee, a position she has held since 2023. Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson is restructuring the committee, splitting housing and homelessness into separate committees. Neither committee will be led by Raman under the new structure. Raman, who is currently running for Los Angeles mayor against Mayor Karen Bass, said the timing of the move is political and claimed it came after she pushed for an audit of the city’s homelessness programs. City officials have pushed back on that claim, saying the change is part of a broader restructuring of City Council committees. The move comes as homelessness remains one of Los Angeles’ biggest challenges and a major issue in the upcoming mayoral race.

An “unidentified substance” has turned the River Irwell “milky green”. The Environment Agency is investigating and has taken samples for analysis, while United Utilities said the spill did not come from its network.The contamination, believed to have started near Rectory Lane in Radcliffe, spread downstream in large quantities. Councillor Ken Simpson suspects it could be an “organised dump” due to the scale of the spill.
