Cedars-Sinai Launches New Center to Develop Robots That Can Perform Surgery on Their Own
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles announced today, October 12, the launch of a groundbreaking Center for Autonomous Robotic Surgery, aimed at developing AI-powered robots capable of independently performing certain surgical tasks.
Unlike today's surgical robots, which are controlled by doctors, the new technology could allow robots to recognize human anatomy, make precise movements and carry out portions of surgery automatically.
The center will be led by Dr. Andrew Hung and robotics expert Dr. Michael Yip, with the goal of making surgery safer, more precise and accessible to more patients.
Doctors will remain in charge, and the technology is still under development. However, this could represent a major step toward a future in which robots perform significant portions of surgical procedures with minimal human intervention.
