Wilshire Country Club Fireworks Return To Hancock Park A longtime Hancock Park Fourth of July tradition is back as the fireworks display at Wilshire Country Club, located at 301 N Rossmore Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90004, is set for 9:00 p.m. after a one-year pause in 2025 due to renovations. The private club sits in the heart of Hancock Park, and while the event is members-only, the fireworks are typically visible from surrounding streets and neighborhoods across the area. For those tracking halachic timing, the display begins just after the first zman for Motzaei Shabbos at 8:52 p.m. in ZIP codes 90004/90036, but before Rabbeinu Tam at 9:22 p.m., making it a timing consideration for those who wait for Rabbeinu Tam before ending Shabbos. --

Boyle Heights Fire Smoke Pushes LA Air Quality To Near-Wildfire Extremes Air pollution from the recent fire at a facility in Boyle Heights led to dangerously high particulate levels across parts of Los Angeles, with conditions briefly reaching levels comparable to major wildfire events. On June 19, three days after the fire began, a temporary monitor at Eastman Elementary in unincorporated East LA recorded an “extremely hazardous” spike of 755 micrograms per cubic meter of fine particles for more than an hour, according to the South Coast Air Quality Management District. For comparison, a monitoring station operated by the California Institute of Technology recorded about 650 micrograms per cubic meter during the 2025 Eaton Fire, highlighting how intense the local smoke impact became even outside of a wildfire scenario. --

California Gas Tax Increases Again California drivers are now paying more at the pump after the state's gasoline excise tax increased by 2.2 cents per gallon on July 1 as part of the state's annual inflation adjustment. The tax now stands at 63.4 cents per gallon, the highest state gas tax in the nation. The increase is automatic under state law and comes just ahead of the busy Fourth of July travel weekend. While the tax hike itself is 2.2 cents per gallon, actual pump prices may vary depending on crude oil costs, local taxes, and fuel supply. I think electric cars are the way to go but dont shove it down my throat. --

Sewage Spill Closes Part Of Laguna Beach Ahead Of Holiday Weekend A section of Laguna Beach has been closed to swimmers and surfers after an estimated 2,000-gallon sewage spill reached the ocean near Anita Street at Thalia Beach on Thursday. Orange County health officials have closed the water a quarter-mile north and south of the spill site as a precaution. The overflow was caused by a blocked sewer line, which has since been cleared, but the beach will remain closed until water quality tests confirm it is safe to reopen. Anyone planning to visit Laguna Beach for the Fourth of July weekend is urged to check current beach conditions before heading out and avoid entering the water in the affected area. --

CORRECTION: Flyover Was Part Of America250 Celebration, Not FIFA Yesterday's military flyover over Hancock Park was not related to the FIFA World Cup, as previously reported. The four-aircraft formation was part of the America250 Concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Los Angeles celebration featured patriotic tributes, live performances, and a ceremonial military flyover before ending with a fireworks and drone show. The aircraft were most likely U.S. Air Force F-35A Lightning II stealth fighters, among the Air Force's most advanced aircraft. After completing the flyover, the formation continued northbound over Hancock Park before turning east and departing Southern California. One widely shared unverified social media post, written by someone claiming their cousin was one of the pilots, stated the aircraft were returning to Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix. While the U.S. Air Force has not publicly confirmed the aircraft's destination, that claim was consistent with what many flight trackers, aviation enthusiasts, and observers believed they were seeing. --

Three-Hour Flights Between Los Angeles And New York Move Closer To Reality A nonstop flight between Los Angeles and New York in just three hours may soon become possible after the FAA lifted a long-standing restriction on faster-than-sound commercial flights over land. The change opens the door for a new generation of supersonic passenger aircraft that could cut coast-to-coast travel time nearly in half. Several aerospace companies are already developing next-generation supersonic jets, though commercial service is still several years away. If the technology becomes widely available, travelers could one day leave Los Angeles after breakfast and arrive in New York around lunchtime. --

Parking Too Close To Crosswalks Can Now Get You A Ticket — Even Without Red Curbs Drivers across Los Angeles should take a closer look before parking near intersections. Under California's Daylighting Law (AB 413), parking within 20 feet of the approach side of a marked or unmarked crosswalk is illegal, even if the curb isn't painted red. At crosswalks with curb extensions (bulb-outs), the no-parking zone is 15 feet. While the law took effect in 2025, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has now begun active enforcement in county-patrolled areas. Drivers who violate the rule can receive a $63 citation. Officials say the goal is to improve visibility at intersections, making it easier for drivers to see pedestrians—and for pedestrians to see approaching traffic. --

California Preserves $80 Million In Annual Security Funding For Shuls And Nonprofits Despite ongoing budget pressures, California lawmakers have approved $80 million in annual funding for the state's Nonprofit Security Grant Program, ensuring continued support for Shuls, Jewish schools, churches, mosques, and other nonprofits facing elevated security threats. The funding was preserved even as the state worked to close a multibillion-dollar budget deficit. The grants help organizations pay for security enhancements such as surveillance cameras, reinforced doors, gates, alarm systems, fencing, lighting, and emergency preparedness measures. State officials say the investment reflects California's continued commitment to protecting communities vulnerable to hate crimes and targeted violence. --

California Ranked Among Worst States To Move To In New Study A new national study ranks California among the least desirable states to move to, citing soaring housing costs, affordability challenges, and safety concerns. Researchers say the state's high cost of living and expensive real estate continue to discourage many potential newcomers. The report also points to crime and quality-of-life concerns as factors affecting California's ranking. While the Golden State remains a popular destination for its weather and opportunities, the study found that many people are choosing states with lower housing costs, shorter commutes, and a lower overall cost of living. --

First Monsoon Moisture Of The Year Could Arrive In Southern California Next Week After this week's intense heat, Southern California could get its first taste of the 2026 monsoon season as moisture from the desert Southwest is expected to move into the region early next week. While the forecast is still evolving, residents could notice a significant increase in humidity along with more clouds. As is typical during monsoon season in Southern California, any rainfall is expected to be largely confined to the mountains and deserts, with the Los Angeles Basin likely staying dry. Even without widespread rain, the added moisture often makes the air feel much more humid than Southern Californians are used to. If thunderstorms develop over higher elevations, they could produce lightning, gusty winds, brief heavy downpours, and localized flash flooding. --

LAPD Considers Pausing Police Academy Classes Before 2028 Olympics The LAPD is considering temporarily pausing police academy classes in 2028 to reassign hundreds of instructors and training officers to patrol duties ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics. No final decision has been made. Supporters say the move would boost officer staffing during the Games, while critics argue it could delay hiring new officers at a time when the department is already facing shortages. The LAPD says it remains committed to ensuring it is fully prepared to keep Los Angeles residents and visitors safe during the 2028 Olympic Games as planning continues. --

Boyle Heights Fire Stench Reportedly Getting Worse Residents near the burned Lineage cold storage warehouse say the foul odor is now worse than ever, with many reporting the stench has intensified over the past several days. As temperatures continue to rise, neighbors fear conditions will only get worse while crews continue removing millions of pounds of rotting food. A community meeting will be held tonight (Thursday) at 6:00 p.m. at Stevenson Middle School. Lineage officials are expected to be in attendance as residents demand answers on emergency housing, smoke remediation, financial relief for local businesses, and, most importantly, a clear timeline for completing the cleanup. The meeting comes just days after Monday night's packed community meeting, where many residents left frustrated, saying too many of their questions went unanswered. --

Palisades Village To Reopen August 15 After Wildfire Recovery More than a year and a half after the devastating Palisades Fire, Palisades Village is set to reopen on August 15, marking a major milestone in the community's recovery. The popular outdoor shopping and dining destination underwent more than $100 million in renovations to remove smoke and fire contaminants, even though the complex itself survived the blaze. The center is now 99% leased, with most former businesses returning alongside several new shops and restaurants. The reopening is expected to restore one of the Palisades' main gathering places and provide a much-needed boost as the neighborhood continues rebuilding from the January 2025 wildfire. --

Brush Fire Breaks Out Near Lake Piru, Evacuation Warnings Issued A fast-moving brush fire, now named the Grande Fire, broke out Thursday afternoon near Lake Piru in Ventura County, prompting a large response from Ventura County and Los Angeles County firefighters. Officials say the fire has already burned more than 50 acres as crews work to slow its spread. Evacuation warnings have been issued for nearby areas, and residents are urged to stay alert and be prepared to leave if conditions worsen. Firefighters remain on the scene with both ground and aerial resources as the situation continues to develop. --

Firefighters Gain Upper Hand On Grande Fire Near Lake Piru Firefighters appear to have made significant progress slowing the forward spread of the Grande Fire burning near Lake Piru. One factor likely working in their favor is the fire's close proximity to the Del Valle Regional Training Center, where firefighting resources and personnel are based. While the fire quickly grew from more than 50 acres, aggressive air and ground attacks helped knock down its forward progression before it could spread even farther. Crews remain on scene strengthening containment lines, and evacuation warnings remain in effect for nearby areas as firefighters continue working toward full containment. --

Forecast For This Winter Just Got Bigger: Scientists Now Warn Of Possible Super El Niño Just weeks ago, forecasters were predicting a fairly typical El Niño developing later this year. Now, the outlook has changed dramatically, with climate scientists saying the Pacific Ocean is warming much faster than expected. The latest forecasts now give an 81% chance of a very strong, or "Super El Niño," developing by late 2026 and continuing into early 2027. If that happens, it could rank among the strongest El Niño events ever recorded. For Southern California, a strong El Niño can increase the chances of wetter-than-average winter storms, although it does not guarantee a strong rainy season. For example 2015/2016 Super El Nino did not pan out as a very rainy winter for Southern California. A strengthening El Niño could significantly influence this winter's weather. --

Several Southern California Beaches Under Water Quality Advisories Planning a beach day? You may want to check water quality before heading out. Health officials are advising swimmers to avoid the water at several Southern California beaches after recent testing detected elevated bacteria levels that could increase the risk of illness. Some of the affected areas include portions of Santa Monica Pier, Redondo Beach Pier, Mother's Beach in Marina del Rey, and other locations near storm drains and creek outlets in Los Angeles County. Similar advisories are also in effect at parts of San Diego County, including La Jolla Cove and Tourmaline Surf Park, due to high bacteria levels. Officials say bacteria levels can change quickly, especially during warm weather or after runoff enters the ocean. If you're planning to swim, it's a good idea to check the latest beach conditions before heading out. --

Chaos Erupts At Boyle Heights Meeting Last Night Chaos broke out Thursday night during the Boyle Heights community meeting over the Lineage warehouse fire as emotions boiled over. After the venue reached capacity, several people reportedly pushed past security carrying bullhorns, adding to the disorder as residents demanded answers from Mayor Karen Bass, who was in attendance along with other city officials, and Lineage representatives. Residents voiced anger over the lingering odor, health concerns, cleanup timeline, and the lack of support for families and local businesses. Despite promises from officials that cleanup efforts will continue and Lineage will be held accountable, many left the meeting feeling their questions remained unanswered. --

Summit Fire Erupts In Antelope Valley, Prompting Evacuations A fast-moving brush fire, now known as the Summit Fire, broke out Friday afternoon near the intersection of Jesus Canyon Road East and Avenue Z in the community of Llano, just south of Highway 138 near the Los Angeles–San Bernardino County line. The fire is burning in the high desert north of the Angeles National Forest, east of Palmdale and west of Piñon Hills. Fueled by hot temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds, the fire has rapidly grown to approximately 1,600 acres and remains 0% contained. Evacuation orders and warnings are in effect for nearby communities as firefighters from Los Angeles County Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and assisting agencies continue working to protect homes and slow the fire's spread. --

Safety Concerns Raised A Year Before Boyle Heights Warehouse Fire New reporting reveals that serious safety concerns about the rooftop solar panel system at the Boyle Heights cold-storage warehouse were raised nearly a year before the massive fire that devastated the facility. Records show questions were raised about the solar installation, but the issues were never fully resolved before the June 2026 blaze. The fire remains under investigation, but Lineage has said it believes the blaze started while third-party subcontractors were testing the rooftop solar array. The Los Angeles Fire Department has not yet determined the official cause. The newly revealed concerns are likely to intensify scrutiny over what warnings were known before the fire and whether more could have been done to prevent it. --

Motorcyclist Arrested After Allegedly Reaching 130 MPH On Southern California Freeway A motorcyclist was arrested after California Highway Patrol officers say he was caught riding at more than 130 mph on the Fourth of July along the I-5 Freeway in Orange County. According to CHP, an aircraft tracked the rider from above after officers observed the extreme speed on radar. The motorcycle was weaving through traffic, splitting lanes, and using the center median before officers safely took the rider into custody. Authorities say the arrest is a reminder that reckless speeding puts not only the rider at risk, but everyone else on the road at risk. --

Summit Fire Grows To Nearly 2,700 Acres; Containment Reaches 31% Firefighters continue making steady progress on the Summit Fire burning near Llano in the Antelope Valley. The wildfire has scorched approximately 2,690 acres and is now 31% contained, a significant improvement after the fire spread rapidly through dry brush during Friday's extreme heat. Evacuation orders remain in effect for some areas as crews strengthen containment lines and mop up hotspots. More than 500 firefighters, supported by aircraft and night-flying helicopters, have been battling the blaze. Cooler overnight temperatures have helped slow the fire, and officials say the burn scar from last year's Bridge Fire may also help limit further spread. The cause remains under investigation. --

Southern California Braces For Midweek Heatwave After a relatively mild start to summer, Southern California is gearing up for its hottest stretch of the season so far. Temperatures are expected to climb steadily through the week, with the most intense heat arriving Wednesday through Friday as a strong high-pressure system settles over the region. Valley, inland, and desert communities could see highs ranging from the upper 90s to well above 100 degrees, while even many Los Angeles neighborhoods away from the coast warm into the 90s. The National Weather Service warns that overnight temperatures will stay unusually warm, limiting relief and increasing the risk of heat-related illness. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on elderly neighbors and those without air conditioning. --
