Man Charged With Felony Hate Crime For Alleged Attack On Jewish Man Walking Home From Pico-Robertson Synagogue The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced that a 21-year-old man has been charged with a felony hate crime after allegedly attacking a Jewish resident of West Los Angeles who was walking home from synagogue last month. According to prosecutors, the victim was walking through an alley near the Pico-Robertson area on April 27 at approximately 9:50 PM when the suspect allegedly followed him in a van, jumped out, and attacked him without provocation. Authorities say the suspect, identified as Semaj De Leone James of South Los Angeles, was later identified through an investigation involving West Los Angeles detectives and the FBI. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman stated: “Attacking someone because of their faith is not just a crime against one person, it’s an assault on our community.” The suspect pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance despite prosecutors objecting to the release. The court reportedly cited a recent California Supreme Court decision when making the ruling. If convicted, the suspect faces up to three years in county jail. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 4. --

DOJ Files Major Federal Lawsuit Against UCLA Over Alleged Antisemitism On Campus The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a major federal lawsuit against UCLA, accusing the university of allowing antisemitic harassment and violence against Jewish and Israeli students following the October 7 attacks. According to the lawsuit, Jewish students were allegedly blocked from accessing parts of campus, prevented from attending classes, and subjected to violence and intimidation by masked anti-Israel protesters during encampment demonstrations. The DOJ claims UCLA “knowingly acted with deliberate indifference” while Jewish students faced harassment, assaults, and exclusion from public areas of campus. This marks the second major federal antisemitism-related lawsuit involving UCLA in recent months, as pressure continues to mount on universities across the country over their handling of antisemitism allegations following October 7. --

Other Democrats seeing gains included Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. The poll was conducted May 24–25 among 1,000 likely voters, offering one of the earliest snapshots of what the 2028 presidential landscape could look like. --

LA Voters To Decide On Measure ER Sales Tax Increase Los Angeles County voters will decide on June 2 whether to approve Measure ER, a proposed 0.5% sales tax increase for five years to help fund the county’s healthcare system. Supporters say the measure would raise about $1 billion a year and is needed to prevent further strain on clinics, hospitals, and emergency rooms. They warn that several county health clinics have already closed and more services could be at risk without new funding. Opponents argue that LA County residents are already facing high costs and that another sales tax hike would further burden families and businesses. The measure will be decided by roughly 5.8 million registered voters in the June 2 primary. --

With Polls Now Closed, When Will We Know the Election Results? The first batch of results will come in no more than two hours after the polls closed, with the first batch including early voting results and mail-in ballots received in the first few weeks of voting. Later tonight, election officials will start adding votes cast today to those tallies. Processing mail-in ballots will take longer, with election officials needing to match the signature on file to the signature on each mailed-in ballot. Most mail-in ballots that were not sent in early likely won’t be counted until later this week, potentially delaying the election results by days. AI Could Crack This Shul Lock Challenge in Seconds A photo making the rounds online shows a shul door lock with a Hebrew riddle posted above the keypad instead of a numeric code. While it may seem clever, many are pointing out that modern AI tools can often solve these types of riddles almost instantly, potentially defeating the purpose of using them as a security measure. As AI becomes more advanced, traditional "security through obscurity" methods may not be as effective as they once were. --

Combined Results: ▪️ Yes: (7.9%) ▪️ No: (92.1%) While this is an informal poll and not representative of the overall electorate, the results were strikingly consistent across all groups, with more than 9 out of 10 respondents saying they do not believe Raman beat Pratt. We don't know where this will go but over 90% doubt of a secure election is concerning. --

First-Ever Kosher Restaurant Coming to CSUN A major milestone for Jewish life at CSUN: the keys have officially been handed over for Karne, the university's first-ever kosher restaurant. Located in the CSUN bookstore complex, Karne is scheduled to open in August 2026 and will provide students, faculty, and visitors with on-campus kosher dining for the first time in the university's history. The project is the culmination of years of advocacy and effort by students, community members, and campus leaders who worked to bring kosher food options to campus. Chabad at CSUN also thanked university leadership, supporters, and partners who helped make the project a reality, with special recognition to Rabbi Mendy Paul, who will oversee the restaurant's operations. While receiving the keys marks a major achievement, work is now underway to prepare the space ahead of the grand opening later this summer. --

10:36 PMRabbi Yitzi Hurwitz, a Los Angeles rabbi living with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), shared a beautiful message thanking people for wrapping tefillin in his honor and expressing how much it means to him. What makes it even more moving is that Rabbi Yitzi is completely paralyzed and communicates using a special eye-tracking computer. A message like this can take him 10–15 minutes to write, one letter at a time, with only his eyes. The fact that he took the time and effort to write such heartfelt words is incredibly inspiring. --
