10:52 PM🇨🇦🇺🇸 CARNEY ASKS PREMIERS TO PUT U.S. ALCOHOL BACK ON SHELVES Prime Minister Mark Carney has asked Canada’s premiers to return American alcohol to provincial liquor-store shelves as part of the emerging trade agreement with the United States. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston revealed the request following Wednesday’s virtual First Ministers meeting, saying it came “directly out of the negotiating table.” Houston said he would be willing to comply once the final agreement is reached — while adding: “Whether Nova Scotians or whether Canadians will actually buy it when it gets back on the shelves, that’s a whole other discussion.” The U.S. has viewed provincial restrictions on American alcohol as a major trade irritant. Most provinces still restrict or ban U.S. alcohol, while Alberta and Saskatchewan do not. Houston also revealed that premiers were asked to review provincial government procurement rules that specifically exclude U.S. suppliers — suggesting the Canadian concessions extend beyond alcohol. The federal government cannot order provinces to restore U.S. liquor sales, meaning the decision ultimately rests with each province. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has strongly defended keeping American alcohol out of the LCBO, has yet to comment on Carney’s request. The developments provide some of the clearest indications yet of what Canada has agreed to give the U.S. as part of the new trade deal.
1:26 AMWow. A special moment as former hostage Eliya Cohen and Nova Festival survivor Ziv Abud stand under the chuppah. Eliya shares that during his captivity, he would often dream of this very moment. He would tell HaKadosh Baruch Hu that if he was granted the chance to one day stand beneath a chuppah, he would stop everything, say “Thank You, Hashem,” and invite everyone to recite Shema Yisrael. And tonight, he was able to fulfill that promise.
1:36 AM🚨 LEGAL TO BUY. LEGAL TO SELL. ILLEGAL TO RIDE: TORONTO’S BIZARRE E-SCOOTER RULES E-scooters have become increasingly common across Toronto — but here’s something many parents and riders may not realize: It is illegal to ride an e-scooter on public property anywhere in Toronto. ❌ Streets ❌ Bike lanes ❌ Sidewalks ❌ Trails and pathways ❌ Parks But the current situation is rather bizarre: 🛴 It is perfectly legal for Toronto stores to sell e-scooters. 💳 It is perfectly legal for residents to spend hundreds — or even more than $1,000 — buying one. 🚫 But it is illegal to actually ride one on Toronto public property. The City says it does not have the authority to regulate their sale. That raises another question: What about families who have already spent significant money on e-scooters, perhaps without realizing there is essentially nowhere on public property in Toronto where they can legally use them? We could not find any City of Toronto buyback, reimbursement or trade-in program for existing owners (similar to gun buybacks we've seen in the USA). If Toronto intends to keep e-scooters off its streets, should the City consider compensating residents who already purchased them?

4:12 PM🚨 TORONTO HOMEOWNER CHARGED AFTER FIRING AT ALLEGED CAR THIEVES A Toronto homeowner is facing a criminal charge after allegedly opening fire when thieves tried to steal a vehicle from his driveway. The suspects fled before police arrived and were not arrested. The homeowner was. There is, however, an important detail: one of the shots reportedly struck a neighbouring home. Thankfully, no one was injured. So what if he had simply fired a warning shot into the air? He still could have faced charges. Under Canada's Criminal Code, intentionally firing a gun while being reckless about another person's life or safety is itself a serious offence. And while Canadian law does allow reasonable force to defend property, the key word is reasonable. Simply trying to steal someone's car does not automatically justify the use of potentially deadly force. The situation can be very different if the homeowner reasonably believes he or someone else is actually in danger. Canadian law recognizes self-defence where there is a reasonable belief of force or a threat of force and the response is reasonable under the circumstances. Bottom line: In Canada, even if someone is stealing your car from your own driveway, firing a gun — including a "warning shot" — can potentially leave you facing criminal charges. 🇨🇦 Welcome to the complicated world of Canadian self-defence laws.

6:32 PM🚨 CHOW WIDENS LEAD OVER BRADFORD IN NEW TORONTO MAYORAL POLL A new Liaison Strategies poll shows Olivia Chow widening her lead over Brad Bradford in Toronto’s mayoral race — a development that may be concerning for voters hoping to see a change in direction at City Hall. Among decided and leaning voters: 🔴 Olivia Chow — 49% 🔵 Brad Bradford — 38% ⚪ Chris Alexander — 11% ⚪ Other — 3% That puts Chow 11 points ahead of Bradford, up from a seven-point lead in Liaison’s Aug. 7 poll. There are still reasons the race could tighten. When undecided voters are included, 19% remain undecided, leaving a significant bloc still up for grabs ahead of the Oct. 26 election. Bradford also has some notable areas of strength. He leads Chow 47% to 39% among men and has a commanding 56% to 34% advantage in Etobicoke among decided and leaning voters. Still, the latest numbers will be concerning for those who believe Toronto needs a different approach on issues such as taxes, traffic, public safety and the overall direction of City Hall. Rather than narrowing the gap, Bradford has lost ground in this latest snapshot of the race. With more than two months remaining, however, nearly one in five voters has yet to make up their mind — meaning this race is far from over. 🗳️ Toronto votes Oct. 26.

9:14 PMANAND CALLS ISRAEL’S DECISION IN 2024 GAZA AID-WORKER STRIKE “UNACCEPTABLE” Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand says Israel’s decision not to pursue criminal charges over the April 2024 IDF strike that mistakenly killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers — including Canadian-American Jacob Flickinger — is “unacceptable.” Israel acknowledged shortly after the incident that serious operational errors had been made. An IDF investigation found the workers had been mistakenly identified as armed terrorists, despite their vehicles being marked and their movements having been coordinated with the military. Two officers were dismissed from their positions and three senior commanders were reprimanded. Israeli authorities have now concluded, however, that while serious mistakes occurred, the evidence does not establish reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct, and the case will therefore not proceed criminally. Anand rejected that outcome, saying Canada continues to seek accountability and justice for Flickinger and the six other aid workers who were killed. World Central Kitchen has also rejected the decision and continues to call for an independent investigation.
10:35 PMTiming really IS everything. It was great to get a call from an accountant who saw our recent post about someone who sold their business for $18 million and was facing approximately $4.5 million in tax. With proper planning, that tax was turned into a charitable gift — without the family losing a dime to tax. The accountant had a client who had also sold their business and wondered whether the same strategy could work for them. It did. There’s a lot of good wisdom and knowledge out there. Nobody has an exclusive on good ideas — especially when the ideas are free. We’ve never met with someone we weren’t able to help in some way. Call us, or call your own advisor. But the best time to look at these opportunities is now — before December 31, 2026 — while there may still be time to reduce taxes that would otherwise be payable next April. 6:29 PM⚖️🇨🇦 ONTARIO APPEAL COURT UPHOLDS SENTENCE FOR FATHER WHO SHOT AT FLEEING HOME INVADERS The Ontario Court of Appeal has refused to increase the sentence of Whitby father Jason Munroe, bringing another chapter of a remarkable home-invasion case to a close. Munroe's home was invaded by armed intruders, and his son was shot. Munroe managed to wrestle a handgun away from one of the attackers. The trial judge accepted that his actions inside the home were lawful self-defence. But Munroe continued firing from his porch as the intruders fled in a vehicle. For that, he was convicted of reckless discharge of a firearm. He was also convicted of obstruction of justice for initially lying to police. He received 729 days of house arrest followed by three years of probation. Prosecutors appealed the sentence, seeking something more severe. The Court of Appeal has now upheld it, describing the circumstances as “exceptional” and taking into account that Munroe had just witnessed his son being shot. 🇺🇸 WOULD THIS HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT IN THE UNITED STATES? Possibly — but perhaps not as dramatically as some might assume. Many U.S. states have strong “Castle Doctrine” or “Stand Your Ground” protections. In some states, a homeowner facing an unlawful and forcible home invasion is presumed to have a reasonable fear of death or serious injury and may use deadly force without retreating. However, even in states with strong protections for homeowners, shooting at an intruder who is clearly fleeing can cross the line from self-defence to a criminal offence. The crucial issue is generally whether the threat is still imminent. American courts have likewise dealt with cases where Castle Doctrine protections ended once attackers had left the dwelling and were fleeing. So the difference between Canada and the U.S. isn't simply “you can shoot a home invader in America but not in Canada.” American law varies considerably by state, and even some of the strongest Castle Doctrine laws do not necessarily give homeowners carte blanche to fire at people who are escaping. Still, Munroe's case raises a difficult question: How much can reasonably be expected of a father in the seconds after armed men invade his home and shoot his son? The appeal judges clearly considered those extraordinary circumstances when deciding that he should not receive a harsher punishment.

1:58 AM🚨 MAN SHOT DEAD BY TORONTO POLICE IN NORTH YORK — NOT FAR FROM OUR COMMUNITY A 26-year-old man is dead after being shot by a Toronto Police officer Saturday afternoon in North York, not far from Toronto’s Orthodox Jewish community. Police were called to the area of Wilson Avenue and King High Avenue, just west of Allen Road, at approximately 1:24 p.m. following reports of a damaged vehicle being driven erratically. Police say the vehicle was involved in a collision and the driver attempted to flee. During an ensuing interaction, an officer discharged their firearm, striking the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has taken over the investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed what occurred during the interaction immediately before the officer opened fire. The shooting occurred only a short distance from the Bathurst-Wilson area and Toronto’s Jewish community. We will update as more details become available.

3:15 AM🇨🇦🇺🇸 CANADA-U.S. TRADE TALKS COLLAPSE — WHAT WENT WRONG? After weeks of negotiations — and growing optimism that a deal was close — Canada-U.S. trade talks collapsed at the eleventh hour Friday night. The failure means President Donald Trump's new 50% tariffs on roughly US$20 billion worth of Canadian goods took effect Saturday. Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by suspending negotiations, recalling Canada's negotiating team and promising dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs beginning September 8. So how did a potential deal fall apart so quickly? Carney says Washington introduced significant last-minute changes to the proposed agreement, concluding that the U.S. "asked too much and offered too little." Among the major sticking points: 🇨🇦 Canadian sovereignty: According to Carney, the U.S. sought restrictions on Canada's ability to pursue trade arrangements with other countries. He described the move as a U.S. "power play" that ultimately became a question of Canadian sovereignty. 🚗 Autos: Canada had been seeking significant relief from the existing 25% U.S. tariff on Canadian-made vehicles. But the final American offer provided less relief than Canada wanted and did not adequately address tariffs on medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. 💰 Not enough in return: Ultimately, Canada concluded that the tariff relief Washington was offering simply wasn't worth the concessions it was demanding. The Americans strongly dispute Carney's version. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says Canada backed away from previous commitments and squandered an opportunity to reach a deal. For now, no further negotiations are planned. Just days ago, Canada was reportedly considering major concessions in hopes of securing an agreement — including encouraging provinces to put American alcohol back on store shelves. Instead, negotiations have collapsed, new tariffs are taking effect, and the two neighbours are heading deeper into a trade war.

6:59 PM🇨🇦 CANADA WARNS BUSINESSES AGAINST ISRAEL PROJECT — ISRAEL FIRES BACK Canada has joined six European governments in condemning Israel's E1 construction plans in Judea and Samaria — even taking the unusual step of warning private businesses against bidding on the project. Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK demanded that Israel retract the plans, declared Israeli settlements illegal under international law, and warned businesses of potential "legal and reputational consequences" if they pursue commercial opportunities connected to E1. Israel is pushing back strongly. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar rejected the criticism, declaring that "the Jewish people have the right to live throughout the Land of Israel" and accusing the British government in particular of adopting a one-sided approach that condemns Israel while ignoring Palestinian terrorism, incitement and the Palestinian Authority's continued payments to terrorists. Sa'ar also disputed the suggestion that Israel had just made a new decision on E1. He said the development decision was made in 2025 and that the tender process has already been underway for months, with additional tender documents only recently published. Meanwhile, HonestReporting Canada has accused Prime Minister Mark Carney of a double standard, pointing to his previous assertion that "lecturing countries from afar" is "ineffective" and arguing that this principle appears to be applied everywhere but Israel. The organization also pointed to northern Cyprus, where Turkey maintains tens of thousands of troops in territory internationally recognized as part of the Republic of Cyprus, questioning why Ottawa's warnings and condemnations appear considerably more focused on Israel. Whatever one's position on E1 itself, Canada's decision to go beyond diplomatic criticism and actively caution private businesses against participating in an Israeli construction project is significant — and raises the question of whether Israel is being held to a standard Canada applies equally elsewhere.

11:13 PMPOILIEVRE CALLS FOR PARLIAMENT TO RECONVENE OVER FAILED U.S. TRADE DEAL Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to bring MPs back to Ottawa immediately following the collapse of Canada–U.S. trade negotiations. Poilievre says Parliament—currently adjourned until September 21—must urgently address three questions: ▪️ What exactly was contained in the proposed agreement Carney rejected? ▪️ How much will retaliatory tariffs cost Canadian families through higher prices? ▪️ How will Ottawa protect Canadian steel, aluminum, lumber and auto jobs? Poilievre is also demanding that the government release the proposed deal so Canadians can judge whether walking away was the right decision. 2:15 PM🇨🇦 MONTREAL BACKS AWAY FROM STRONGLY ANTI-ISRAEL MOTION Montreal City Council has dramatically watered down a controversial motion targeting Israel. The original proposal called on Montreal to accuse Israel of “apartheid” and “genocide,” suspend institutional ties with the Israeli government and municipalities, and exclude Israeli representatives from City Hall events. Before the vote, the governing Ensemble Montréal removed the proposed boycott, the exclusion of Israeli officials and the motion’s most inflammatory language. The revised motion expressing solidarity with Palestinians and civilian victims passed 54–6.

3:14 PM🚨 BREAKING: CANADA HITS BACK WITH NEW TARIFFS ON U.S. GOODS Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on $27.6 billion worth of American imports following the collapse of trade negotiations with the United States. Beginning September 8, more than 700 U.S. products will face Canadian tariffs of 15%, 25% or 50%. Among the products targeted: 🔹 Steel and aluminum 🔹 Furniture and clothing 🔹 Cheese and appliances 🔹 Seafood 🔹 Electronics and tools 🔹 Agricultural equipment Ottawa says the measures will match Washington’s new tariffs “dollar-for-dollar, rate-for-rate” while attempting to limit the cost to Canadian consumers. The federal government also announced a $7.5-billion support package for affected Canadian workers and businesses. The major question now: Will President Trump retaliate again, triggering an even broader Canada–U.S. trade war? 4:21 PM🇨🇦🇺🇸 CANADA-U.S. TRADE WAR ESCALATES AS TRUMP WARNS CANADA The war of words between Washington and Ottawa intensified Wednesday, with President Donald Trump declaring that “it’s time to teach Canada you can’t do this anymore.” Trump insisted Canada made a major mistake by walking away from last week’s proposed trade agreement, while senior White House adviser Peter Navarro warned that Canada will “never” get that offer again — predicting any eventual deal will be worse. The comments come after Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on approximately C$27.6 billion worth of U.S. goods, including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment and electronics. The measures take effect September 8. Meanwhile, Trump’s new 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods are already in effect, with another major escalation looming: 50% tariffs on Canadian automobiles and parts beginning January 1. Despite the increasingly hostile rhetoric, analysts say the September and January deadlines leave time for the two sides to return to negotiations before the trade war becomes significantly more damaging. The Toronto Scoop will continue to follow developments.

5:21 PM⚡ FORD BACKS AWAY FROM THREAT TO CUT OFF U.S. ELECTRICITY Premier Doug Ford says Ontario will not unilaterally cut electricity exports to the United States, despite previously threatening to shut them off “with a smile” if the trade war escalated. Ford said any such move would require a coordinated “Team Canada approach” involving other provinces. The premier also confirmed Ontario will not run its anti-tariff advertisements in the U.S. ahead of the November midterms, saying it is time to “simmer things down” and return to negotiations. However, Ford maintained that “all options are on the table” if President Trump continues escalating the trade dispute.

2:41 PM🇨🇦 CBC DIRECTS JOURNALISTS: DON’T CALL 9/11 A “TERRORIST ATTACK” In a directive that is raising eyebrows and outrage, CBC News journalists have reportedly been told ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11: “Do not refer to the Sept. 11 attacks as terrorist attacks.” The directive comes from CBC’s Senior Director of Journalistic Standards and Public Trust, Basem Boshra. CBC says this reflects its longstanding policy of avoiding the terms “terrorist” and “terrorism” in its own editorial voice — the same policy that sparked controversy over its coverage of Hamas following October 7. If the murder of nearly 3,000 people by al-Qaeda on 9/11 can’t simply be called a terrorist attack, what can?

4:22 PM⚖️ ONTARIO COURT OPENS DOOR TO INFLUENCER LIABILITY FOR ONLINE MOBS An Ontario court has granted an injunction against a social media influencer with more than 100,000 followers after she allegedly mobilized her audience against a Toronto employment lawyer. The campaign resulted in fake reviews, threatening messages and antisemitic abuse targeting the lawyer's perceived Jewish and Israeli identity — including disturbing attention directed toward an Israeli flag pictured near photos of her children. In Miller v. Ahn, the court treated the influencer's mobilization of her audience, approval of the attacks and refusal to stop them as part of her own conduct. The ruling could have major implications for influencers who “weaponize” large online audiences against individuals. The decision is an interim ruling, not a final judgment.

5:45 PM🚨 BREAKING: TRUMP OFFICIALLY RENAMES LAKE ONTARIO “LAKE AMERICA” It wasn’t just a joke. U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an Executive Order directing the U.S. government to officially rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The order directs the U.S. Secretary of the Interior and Board on Geographic Names to implement the change within 30 days and update federal maps, documents and communications. Trump argues that the lake is a “tremendous asset to the United States,” citing American investment in the Great Lakes, shipping, security and its historical importance to the U.S. The order only controls how the U.S. federal government refers to the lake — Canada is not required to recognize the new name. The extraordinary move comes just days after Trump first floated the idea amid escalating tensions between Canada and the United States.
