✈️ Former Air Canada Captain Accused of Flying for 16 Years with Fake Licence Peel Police have charged a retired Air Canada captain after alleging he used forged licensing documents from 2009 until his retirement in 2025. Investigators say Barrie resident Geoffrey Wall flew approximately 900 domestic and international flights, carrying tens of thousands of passengers and earning millions of dollars, despite never obtaining the Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) required to captain large commercial aircraft such as the Boeing 767, 777, and 787. Police allege the forged credentials were uncovered during a routine evaluation at Pearson Airport in March 2025. Air Canada says the pilot held a valid Commercial Pilot Licence and repeatedly passed all required flight checks and training, maintaining that passenger safety was not compromised. Marc Pinizzotto, 43, a member of the Emergency Task Force, has died after being shot while executing a search warrant Thursday morning in the Black Creek and Trethewey area. Police say the warrant was connected to the ongoing investigations into the shootings targeting the U.S. Consulate and several GTA synagogues. An exchange of gunfire occurred during the operation. 🕯️ Today Marks the Yahrtzeit of Toronto’s First Chassidic Rebbe 🕯️ Today, כ"ז סיון, marks the yahrtzeit of Harav HaKadosh Rebbe Naftali Tzvi Horowitz zt"l (נפתלי צבי בן רבי ישראל הורוביץ), the Krakover Rebbe of Toronto and widely recognized as the city's first Chassidic Rebbe. Long before Toronto became home to the thriving Torah and Chassidic communities we know today, one of the city's earliest spiritual leaders quietly laid the foundations for Chassidic life in Canada. The Rebbe came from one of the most illustrious dynasties in Galician Chassidus. He was a descendant of the legendary Rebbe Naftali Tzvi Horowitz of Ropshitz, one of the great disciples of the school of Rebbe Elimelech of Lizhensk and the founder of the famed Ropshitz dynasty. The Toronto Rebbe's father was Rabbi Yisrael Horowitz of Veislitz (Wiślica), and he himself served as Rebbe before eventually settling in Canada. When he arrived in Toronto, the city's Jewish community was still in its infancy. There were no large yeshivos, kollelim, or established Chassidic neighborhoods. Kashrus infrastructure was limited, and maintaining traditional Yiddishkeit in North America was often an uphill battle. Yet the Krakover Rebbe became a source of inspiration and leadership for many of the city's early Jewish immigrants, particularly those from Galicia and Poland. Historical and genealogical records describe him as "the first Rebbe in Toronto." This distinction makes him one of the foundational figures in the history of Orthodox Judaism in Canada. The Rebbe was niftar in 1928 and is buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Toronto, where an ohel was later erected over his kever. Located within easy walking distance of the Bathurst and Lawrence neighborhood, his resting place remains one of the oldest known kevarim of a Chassidic Rebbe in Canada and a tangible link to the earliest days of Torah life in our city. As Toronto's Torah community continues to flourish with dozens of shuls, yeshivos, kollelim, and Chassidic courts, it is worth remembering the pioneers who arrived when Jewish life here was still being built.
