She was stabbed near Seventh Avenue and 42nd Street and later died at Bellevue. Cisneros, 49, of Queens, first stabbed a 68-year-old Rhode Island tourist waiting to cross the street with his wife. About 20 seconds later, she fatally stabbed Piacenti. Officers say they spent four minutes ordering her to drop two kitchen knives pulled from a Target bag. Tasers did not stop her. She advanced toward police and was shot. James’ office says the probe is required under state law whenever a police officer’s actions may have caused a death. Republican AG candidate Saritha Komatireddy says that focus misses the larger failure. Cisneros had documented NYPD mental health encounters in 2018 and 2019, including a 2019 suicide attempt on subway tracks in Queens. Komatireddy is calling for a new Office of Civil Commitment that would pair law enforcement with physicians to get dangerous, severely mentally ill people into treatment before the next attack. Mayor Zohran Mamdani thanked the officers who stepped in and stopped the attack from getting worse. VINews’s Take: The police shooting review is happening because the law requires it. The harder question for New York is how someone already known to the system ended up on Seventh Avenue with two knives.

Crowther was 24 and working as an equities trader on the 104th floor of the South Tower when the plane hit. He tied a red bandana over his face, found a usable stairwell, and made multiple trips to the 78th-floor sky lobby, guiding people through smoke and wreckage. Survivors later said he saved as many as 18 lives. He was last seen in the lobby with FDNY firefighters. He died when the tower collapsed. “This means the world to me, my daughters, Paige and Honor, and our entire family,” Alison Crowther said. “This will be treasured for generations to come.” The ceremony was part of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation’s Steel Across America event. A 16,900-pound steel beam recovered from Ground Zero stood beside the stage.
