New York’s flunk factories: A bombshell report finds that nearly half of New York City’s public schools have more than half of their students failing state math or reading exams. The report found that failure is so rampant in the city’s public education system that it has become normalized among principals. • In 906 public schools — out of a total of 1,597 — fewer than half of students passed both exams. In 503 of them, a majority failed both math and reading. This means that a staggering 43% of the system’s 912,000 students have a 50-50 odds of failure. This is despite spending $40 billion on public schools in 2024, or $36,293 per pupil, double the national average. • Meanwhile, six months into office, Mamdani has yet to release his education agenda. Out of the hundreds of press releases his office sent out since his term began, just 11 relate to schools, and one to actual education. Education advocates say they have never seen a mayor with so little interest in schools.
