1:39 AMBUSING FIASCO ANALYSIS: Lakewood Transportation Crisis Looms As Schools Urge Parents To Opt Out Of LSTA Following Thursdayâs dramatic announcement from the Lakewood Student Transportation Authority (LSTA) that the cost of non-mandated transportation would increase from $385 to $945 per student for the 2026-27 school year, many Lakewood schools, at the recommendation of the Igud Hamosdos, have begun urging parents of non-mandated children not to enroll their children in the program at the new rate. In their guidance, the Igud said it had consulted with numerous schools and recommended that parents âdo not opt inâ to the non-mandated busing program at the $945 rate, as they âbelieve the cost should be covered through government funding rather than placed on parents.â In response to that recommendation, many Lakewood parents have been reaching out to TLS through our multiple platforms, asking what this means as the new school year gets underway. But while it is too early to predict how this can play out, especially in the long term, the short term implications can be tremendous â and disastrous. 2:59 AMNEW: Major Cross St Widening Project Moves Ahead with CAFRA Permit Now in Hand A major road project that is expected to significantly improve traffic flow in Lakewood is moving ahead, with Ocean County recently receiving the CAFRA permit needed to continue the work, TLS has learned. TLS has obtained a map showing the project being completed in multiple phases, with work continuing along Cross Street and the future connection toward East Veterans Highway. The project is expected to create a major new five-lane thoroughfare connecting Route 9 to East Veterans Highway, providing a major east-west route through the area and helping ease the heavy congestion on Cross Street as well as traffic traveling between Lakewood and Jackson. 3:21 PMLetter: Is Your Daughter Not in High School Yet? To My Fellow Friend, Wow, what a year itâs been! This process of getting into High School is not a simple matter. For years, Iâve been hearing about the difficulties involved, but I never thought it would happen to US. My daughter is really an amazing girl. Iâm not just saying this because I am her mother. I get raving reviews about her wherever I go. She is BH very talented, capable, and has lots of personality. She is a true Bas Yisroel in her dress, actions and Tefillos. Her Middos are above and beyond. She is the one who always holds the door open for me and lets me walk in first. She is the one to jump up and help when she sees I am not managing. She is the first girl to approach another girl who is lonely or having a hard day. She is constantly looking for Chessed opportunities. Her teachers and principals love her, and had only the best things to say to all the High Schools we applied to. 6:25 PMLetter: A Response As the writer of the previous TLS letter, I am somewhat bewildered by this response, I agree with much of what you wrote â just not with the conclusion you seem to draw from it. You correctly say that transparency cannot work in only one direction. I couldnât agree more. But are you not aware that when a parent asks a school for tuition assistance, the school already demands an extremely detailed picture of that parentâs finances and lifestyle? Parents are asked what they drive, how the vehicle is financed, where they vacationed, whether they went away for Yom Tov, what they spent, what assets they have, and numerous other personal financial questions. These are not hypothetical examples; they are actual questions on tuition assistance forms. READ MORE â¤ľď¸ https://thelakewoodscoop.com/news/letter-a-response-14/
8:08 PMPassing the Torah Forward | Daniel Pollack When my parents passed away, I requested only one thing from their estate: a small, framed picture of my great-great-grandfather, Shmuel Moshe Sprafkin. I do not know any of the precise details of his daily life: the worries that occupied him, the prayers he whispered, the hopes he carried for his children and grandchildren. Staring across more than a century with kind, steady eyes, I have held his gaze many times. So often, I imagine him speaking directly to me, whispering how precious it is to pass our Jewish tradition down to the next generation. That haunting, beautiful thought came to life today at shul. The room grew still as my son was chosen to be the chassan for the Shabbos mincha davening. A moment later, the gabbai handed me a tallis to do pesicha, the honor of opening the holy ark. My hands trembled slightly as I pulled back the velvet curtain and grasped the Sefer Torah. In that instant, the room seemed to disappear. The other congregants, the bookshelves, the familiar walls of the room â all of it receded.Turning around, I looked at my son waiting to receive the Torah scroll. As I lifted it, and literally passed it into his outstretched arms, a wave of emotion enveloped me. Tears immediately filled my eyes, blurring the sight of the silver crowns gleaming in the light of the beis medrash. In that sacred moment, the physical world faded away. I was no longer just a father in a modern sanctuary. I was a vital link in an unbroken chain stretching all the way back to my great-great-grandfather â keeping my quiet promise alive.Daniel Pollack, MSW, JD is a professor at Yeshiva Universityâs Wurzweiler School of Social Work. After months of hard work and lots of siyata dishmaya, the volatility had largely subsided. 11:30 PMLetter: Therapy Expense Dear School Administration, I am writing to express my deep frustration and concern about the pressure placed on parents to pay for outside therapy and other services intended to help children meet a particular standard of behavior, performance, or development. Many families are already struggling to afford the basic necessities of life. Adding the expectation that parents must pay for private therapy creates an enormous financial burden. Where are parents supposed to find this money? How are families who are already stretched financially expected to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for additional services simply because the school believes their child needs to be âperfectedâ? 2:41 PMExplainer: The Reason Behind Lakewoodâs $2.75 Million LSTA Cut â And Why More Cuts May Be Coming Last weekâs dramatic announcement from the Lakewood Student Transportation Authority (LSTA) that they will be raising the fee for non-mandated children to opt into the busing program has raised questions about why the reduction is happening now and what prompted the township to make the cut so soon before school started, when the state budget was approved in late June. Asked for comment, Township officials tell The Lakewood Scoop that the subsidy reduction only came after the State Local Finance Board rejected Lakewoodâs request to raise an additional $12.9 million in property tax revenue above the stateâs 2% cap, which would have allowed the township to raise and spend additional property tax revenue. TLS first reported on that decision earlier this month. READ MORE â¤ľď¸ https://thelakewoodscoop.com/news/explainer-the-reason-behind-lakewoods-2-75-million-lsta-cut-and-why-more-cuts-may-be-coming/

2:01 PMVan Drew Accuses Sherrill Of âPolitical Hit Pieceâ Over Election Integrity Dispute; Vows To Continue Investigating U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew is accusing New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill of responding to questions about New Jerseyâs voter registration system with political attacks rather than providing answers about how thousands of people who identified themselves as noncitizens were placed on the stateâs voter rolls. Van Drew, a former Democrat who switched over to the Republican party several years ago, said in a statement that he and members of the Republican Study Committee initially sought information about the voter registration issue to determine how the system failed and what safeguards are in place to prevent similar problems in the future. The congressman said New Jerseyâs admission that thousands of people who identified themselves as noncitizens were registered to vote â and that some individuals registered through the error later cast ballots â warranted a thorough investigation. 6:54 PMHe Never Took No for an Answer â Except From Daas Torah: A Tribute to Reb Yankie Meyer ztâl on His Yahrzeit, 13 Elul For decades, âYankie Meyerâ was a household name. He was the ultimate askan of a generation â a man whose address was wherever a Yid needed help and whose hours were whenever the telephone rang. And it always rang: minutes before Shabbos, on Yom Kippur, during the Pesach Seder, and while everyone else was on vacation. Sometimes it was a single Yid sitting frightened in a police station. Sometimes a family had suffered an unimaginable tragedy. Sometimes an entire community needed someone who could accomplish the seemingly impossible. The scale changed. Yankie did not. The settlement, which is subject to court approval, could provide New Jersey with more than $752 million. The agreement is part of a broader settlement valued at between $12.1 billion and $17.1 billion, which state officials described as the largest state consumer protection settlement in U.S. history outside of the Big Tobacco settlements of the 1990s. The agreement resolves claims brought by 47 states and the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands alleging that Meta designed its platforms with addictive features, exposed young users to serious mental health risks and misled the public about the safety of its products. Once I recognized inflammation as the common thread, I began asking a deeper question: what is driving it? READ MORE â¤ľď¸ https://thelakewoodscoop.com/news/eating-like-royalty-aharon-elkayam-m-s/

11:28 PMA Community-Wide Approach to School Transportation Submitted: Dear Town Officials/School Board Members, I would like to propose an idea for improving school transportation while reducing traffic throughout our town. Rather than having families pay transportation costs based on how far they live from the school, I believe every family in town could contribute a small, shared fee toward school busing. The cost would be spread among all families, regardless of where they live or whether they currently qualify for school transportation.
