A car battery exploded Wednesday evening on the ramp from Route 59 to the New York State Thruway. Spring Valley Fire Department, Clarkstown Police, Rockland Paramedics, Nanuet EMS and the Rockland County HazMat Team responded to the scene. The HazMat Team safely removed the damaged battery.

The Town of Ramapo held a solemn 9/11 remembrance ceremony Wednesday evening, marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and honoring the Rockland County residents whose lives were lost that day.

The ceremony began with the Town of Ramapo Police Honor Guard, followed by welcoming remarks from Town Supervisor Michael Specht and an acknowledgment of elected officials and other dignitaries in attendance.

The program included reflections on the events of September 11, the reading of the names of Rockland County residents who were killed in the attacks, and a moment of silence in their memory.

The Town also paid tribute to members of the Ramapo community who were lost on 9/11, emphasizing the enduring commitment to honor their lives, remember their sacrifice and ensure that the events of that day are never forgotten.

Wednesday evening’s ceremony was held under the theme, “A Day of Remembrance, A Lifetime of Gratitude,” as residents, officials and community members gathered together 25 years after the attacks to reflect on the lives lost and the courage and unity that followed.

The Town of Ramapo Highway Department is now better equipped to prepare for major storms after receiving access to a sandbag-making machine through the Rockland County Office of Emergency Management.

Ramapo Highway Superintendent Fred Brinn thanked Rockland County OEM, under the direction of Orrin Ben-Jacob, for making the equipment available to the town, saying it will significantly speed up storm preparations.

“Previously, it would take our men more than half a day to fill approximately 200 sandbags by hand,” Brinn told Monsey Scoop. “With this machine, we went through eight tons of sand in just 40 minutes and were able to produce 200 bags.”

Brinn said the Town has also arranged with the Rockland County Office of Emergency Management to obtain the machine whenever needed ahead of major storms or flooding threats.

The equipment will allow Highway Department crews to prepare sandbags far more quickly, giving the Town additional resources to protect roads, properties and other vulnerable areas during severe weather events.

Hosted by Ari Greenfield, the event will give residents an opportunity to meet Rand, ask questions and discuss issues important to the community. A 42-year-old Orangetown man has been sentenced to nine years in state prison for burglarizing a Spring Valley residence, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced Wednesday.

Wesleigh Gilsenan was sentenced on September 9 by Judge Kevin F. Russo to nine years in state prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. Gilsenan was convicted on January 30 following a two-day bench trial of second-degree burglary. The court determined that he is a second violent felony offender based on a previous second-degree burglary conviction in Orange County in 2010.

Prosecutors said Gilsenan unlawfully entered a first-floor apartment in the Village of Spring Valley at approximately 10:50 a.m. on April 24, 2025, and searched through the victim’s belongings, including medication and money.

The Spring Valley Police Department investigated the burglary with assistance from the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

“Burglary is not just a property crime, it is a profound invasion of the sanctity of an individual’s home and a violation of their sense of safety that leaves a lasting trauma on victims,” Walsh said. He credited prosecutors and law enforcement for their work and said the enhanced sentence reflects Gilsenan’s repeat criminal conduct.

The case was prosecuted by Executive Assistant District Attorney Emily McNiff and Senior Assistant District Attorney Katie Crispi.

Town of Ramapo Police officers in plain clothes conducted a pedestrian crosswalk enforcement checkpoint at West Maple Avenue and Kingspoint Lane, stopping vehicles that failed to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

The Village of Spring Valley is launching an extensive catch basin cleaning operation across multiple areas of the village as officials work to improve drainage and prepare local infrastructure ahead of the winter season.

The project follows a summer marked by periods of heavy rainfall and significant construction activity throughout Spring Valley, which can lead to dirt, debris and other material accumulating inside catch basins and impacting drainage.

An outside contractor will be working alongside the Village of Spring Valley Department of Public Works to carry out the expanded cleaning operation. Village officials met Wednesday morning to coordinate the work and review locations, with the project expected to continue over the coming weeks.

Officials say clearing the drainage system ahead of winter is especially important, as snow, ice and melting conditions can place additional strain on catch basins and create flooding or roadway issues when drainage systems become blocked.

Deputy Mayor Yisroel Eisenbach told Monsey Scoop, “We want to make sure our drainage system is properly maintained before the winter season arrives. Cleaning these catch basins now will help improve water flow, reduce the risk of flooding and keep our streets safer for residents.”

Trustee Yakov Yosef Kaufman told Monsey Scoop, “This is an important preventative project for the village. We are working proactively to address drainage issues and make sure Spring Valley is as prepared as possible for the rain, snow and winter weather ahead.”

The project is part of the village’s broader effort to strengthen its Department of Public Works and improve municipal services ahead of the winter season.

Orange & Rockland Utilities says its operations generated $2.4 billion in total economic activity across its New York and New Jersey service territory in 2025, according to a newly released economic impact study.

The study, conducted by HR&A Advisors, found that O&R’s economic output represented approximately 1% of the gross domestic product across its service area and was more than $400 million, or 33%, higher than in 2024.

O&R also supported an estimated 3,920 jobs during the year, a 9% increase since 2022. The company said 96% of its employees live in New York or New Jersey, while nearly half of its workforce is represented by unions.

“This report shows that our commitment to powering the region goes beyond the grid—it’s an investment in people, jobs, and shared prosperity,” O&R President and CEO Michele O’Connell said.

According to the report, O&R spent $186 million on contracts with businesses in New York and New Jersey, including $70 million with small businesses, more than double the amount reported in 2022.

The utility also reported $23 million in clean-energy and electric-infrastructure improvements benefiting disadvantaged communities, along with another $23 million used to reduce energy bills for approximately 17,000 low-income customers through its Energy Affordability Program.

O&R said it paid $196 million in taxes and fees across New York and New Jersey during 2025, including approximately $101 million in local taxes throughout its service territory. Rockland County received the largest portion at $60 million, followed by Orange County at $37 million, Sullivan County at $1.8 million, Bergen County at approximately $686,000 and Passaic County at approximately $36,000.

The company said it plans to continue investing in grid reliability and infrastructure, job creation, economic development and programs designed to assist vulnerable customers.

Orange & Rockland Utilities, a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, provides electric service to approximately 300,000 customers in southeastern New York and northern New Jersey, as well as natural gas service to approximately 140,000 customers in New York.

Senator Bill Weber and Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann joined Congressman Mike Lawler today for a special ceremony honoring Rockland County native Welles Remy Crowther, known as the “Man in the Red Bandana,” who saved at least 10 lives in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, before losing his own life. Crowther was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his extraordinary heroism and sacrifice.

Congressman Mike Lawler joined the family of 9/11 hero Welles Remy Crowther in Washington on Tuesday as President Donald Trump posthumously awarded Crowther the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Crowther, an Upper Nyack native and volunteer firefighter who became known as the “Man in the Red Bandana,” was honored during a ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. The White House said the event brought together first responders, families and officials to honor those who ran toward danger during the attacks.

Crowther was a 24-year-old equities trader working in the South Tower of the World Trade Center when it was struck on September 11, 2001. Wearing his trademark red bandana to protect himself from smoke, Crowther helped lead survivors from the 78th-floor sky lobby to safety and repeatedly returned upstairs to assist others before losing his life when the tower collapsed. Survivors later credited him with helping save numerous lives.

“On September 11, 2001, when terror struck our nation, Welles Remy Crowther did what he was raised to do: he ran toward danger and answered the call,” Lawler said following the ceremony. “Wearing his trademark red bandana, he saved upwards of 18 lives that day and inspired millions of Americans with his courage.”

“Twenty-five years later, Welles is receiving the recognition he justly deserves,” Lawler added, thanking President Trump for honoring Crowther and his family, particularly his mother, Alison Crowther.

Lawler has pushed for national recognition of Crowther’s heroism. In September 2025, he joined Alison Crowther, local firefighters and Rockland County officials at the Nyack Fire Department to call for Crowther to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A day earlier, Lawler presented President Trump with a red bandana from the Crowther family during a Yankees game marking the 24th anniversary of 9/11.

President Trump announced during a May 2026 visit to Rockland County that Crowther would receive the honor.

“By bestowing the highest civilian honor on Welles Remy Crowther, we also honor every firefighter, police officer, EMT, and first responder who ran toward danger that day to save lives,” Lawler said. “Welles showed us what it means to put others before yourself. What a legacy worth remembering, and one America will never forget.”

An MVA occurred earlier at West Maple Avenue and Carlton Road, Ramapo Police were on the scene. No injuries were reported.

Earlier today, the New City Fire Department responded to a fire involving solar panels on the roof of a home at 15 Duane Avenue. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.

The fundraiser brought together local business owners, community leaders and supporters, giving attendees an opportunity to speak directly with Lawler about issues impacting businesses, families and communities throughout Rockland County and the surrounding region.

Also in attendance were Rabbi Moshe Margeratten of the Tzedek Association, a son of Shmiel Yitzchok Margeratten, and Yossi Margeratten, Coordinator of Chaverim Of Rockland and also a son of the owner.

Lawler spoke with attendees about his work in Congress and heard directly from area business owners about the challenges and priorities facing their companies and employees.

The visit included a tour of the facility followed by the fundraiser and discussions between Congressman Lawler, the Margeratten family, local business owners and other community members in attendance.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday that New York State will significantly increase security around shuls and Jewish communities across the state ahead of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, while distributing a record $70 million in funding to help protect nonprofit and religious institutions vulnerable to hate crimes and attacks.

Hochul said she has directed the New York State Police and the state’s Hate Crimes Task Force to carry out a surge in law enforcement presence at religious sites from Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur. State Police have already begun proactive outreach to religious leaders and are sharing intelligence with local law enforcement agencies, federal authorities and security organizations across New York.

The increased patrols will include a heightened State Police presence around shuls, Jewish neighborhoods and religious institutions, supplementing security provided by local law enforcement agencies. Hochul said the goal is to provide worshippers with greater peace of mind during the High Holidays amid continued concerns over antisemitic incidents.

The governor also announced that a record $70 million will be distributed to 290 nonprofit community-based organizations through New York’s Securing Communities Against Hate Crimes grant program. The program, administered by the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, provides funding to organizations considered vulnerable because of their ideology, beliefs or mission.

The grants can be used for a wide range of security improvements, including surveillance cameras, alarm and panic-button systems, barriers and fencing, improved locks, shatter-resistant glass, security training and cybersecurity upgrades. Organizations were eligible to seek grants of up to $250,000.

According to the governor’s office, more than $201 million has now been provided through the program for 2,035 security projects since Hochul took office five years ago. Hochul said the latest $70 million allocation is roughly triple the level of funding available when she first became governor.

Hochul also pointed to New York’s recently enacted buffer-zone protections around houses of worship, which make harassment within 50 feet of a shul or other house of worship a crime under specified circumstances. She said the measure is intended to protect people entering religious institutions from harassment or interference while exercising their right to worship.

“We shouldn’t have to do this,” Hochul said while discussing the need to fortify religious institutions against hate, adding that the state will remain vigilant as the High Holidays approach.

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Walsh II is highlighting the senior leadership team overseeing the District Attorney’s Office, pointing to the group’s extensive prosecutorial and law enforcement experience.

Ramapo Police and the Hillcrest Fire Department are on the scene of an MVA involving a vehicle that veered off the roadway and into the woods on Route 202 near Ladentown Road. No injuries were reported.

Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, Hagaon HaRav David Yosef, visited the Skvere Rebbe and the Skvere Dayan of New Square on Monday afternoon.

Transport of Rockland’s TOR #59 bus has resumed service over the Route 59 bridge at Pascack Road following completion of the state’s bridge reconstruction project. The route had been detoured since 2020 due to a weight restriction that prevented TOR buses from crossing the bridge. With the restriction lifted, buses are once again traveling along Route 59 between the Exit 14 Park & Ride and South Central Avenue in Spring Valley.

Earlier today, emergency personnel responded to an MVA involving an overturned vehicle on the Palisades Interstate Parkway northbound near Exit 16. Injuries were reported.

Longtime North Rockland football coach and Sports Hall of Famer Pete Warner has passed away. The Haverstraw and Stony Point Police Departments both paid tribute to Warner, remembering the longtime coach and teacher for the major impact he had on generations of students, athletes and the North Rockland community.

The New City Fire Department responded to Paramount Country Club at approximately 11:30 AM today for a reported golf cart fire. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. No injuries were reported

Assemblyman Aron Wieder presented $350,000 in state funding to 11 local organizations and community partners from across the 97th Assembly District at a check presentation in his Pearl River district office this week.

The funding supports public safety, education, emergency services and family services for residents across Orangetown and Ramapo.

“It’s a real honor to present a total of $350,000 to organizations and community partners across our great 97th Assembly District,” Wieder said. “These checks are more than just funding; they are an investment in Rockland County,” Wieder added. “When I ran for this office, I promised to bring Rockland’s voice to Albany, and today, we are bringing Albany’s resources back home. This is what delivering for the 97th Assembly District looks like.”

Wieder noted the diverse impact of the grants.

“We’re proud to support Friends of Rockland and RSK in the important work they do for Rockland County. The *Village of Piermont Police and Fire Departments*, joined by the Mayor, thanked Wieder for his support. “This allocation will give us the ability to improve the interoperability of our radio systems in emergency situations,” they said.

*Benji Brecher of Lev Teen Center* said the center serves more than 250 at-risk boys, with 50 to 70 attending daily. “We mentor them, we teach them, we train them, we get them on their feet. We have 17 married boys already who went through our program,” Brecher said. “We have a very large budget and we don’t charge any tuition. We work very hard, 20 hours a day, helping these boys.”

Meyer Tauber of Harmonious Hearts expressed his gratitude to Wieder for the funding. “We are deeply grateful to Assemblyman Aron Wieder for securing this important grant. This funding will support crucial community outreach, expand Narcan training throughout Rockland County, and strengthen opioid awareness and prevention efforts for our youth and children.”

Firefighters returned to 22 Termakay Drive Monday morning after a caller reported smoke coming from the roof and kitchen area, in what appeared to be a rekindle of Sunday’s fire. The situation was quickly brought under control.

A vehicle crashed into a tree on Van Orden Avenue, with the driver fleeing the scene following the crash. Faist EMS, Tallman Fire Department and Ramapo Police responded. The driver was later located by Ramapo Police.

Rockland County Legislator Itamar J. Yeger recently recognized Akiva Zidell for his dedication to emergency medical service, community leadership and his growing career in healthcare.

Zidell has volunteered with the Spring Hill Community Ambulance Corps since 2022, responding to emergency calls while steadily taking on additional leadership responsibilities within the organization. After serving as a mentor and corresponding secretary, he became president of Spring Hill EMS this year. Spring Hill EMS currently lists Zidell as its president, and Reuters identified him in that role during coverage of the July heat wave in Rockland County.

His service was recognized earlier this year when Rockland County EMS named him the 2025 Basic Life Support Provider of the Year, honoring his work as an EMT, mentor and field training officer.

Zidell is also pursuing a career in nursing. He was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and graduated from nursing school in August alongside his sister, Chemda Gabay.

Public service and healthcare have long been part of the Zidell family. His father, Dovid, heads respiratory therapy at Friedwald and has spent years serving the community as a volunteer paramedic with Hatzoloh, while his mother, Tzivie, is an architect.

“What is especially impressive is that Akiva hasn’t waited for his nursing career to begin before giving back,” Yeger said. “He is already doing it — responding to emergencies, mentoring others, leading his ambulance corps and preparing for a profession devoted to caring for people.”

Due to Labor Day, garbage collection in unincorporated Ramapo will be delayed by one day this week. Monday’s pickup moves to Tuesday, with each day’s service pushed back through Saturday.

Assemblyman Patrick J. Carroll announced more than $2.8 million in state funding for several Rockland County first responder agencies during a visit to the New City Ambulance Corps on Thursday.

Carroll was joined by New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie for a tour of the ambulance corps facility, where they met with volunteers and learned more about the work local emergency responders perform throughout the community.

Representatives from the New City, Congers, Nanuet and Haverstraw ambulance corps were in attendance, along with members of the Thiells Fire Department and Nyack Mayor Joe Rand.

According to Carroll, the funding will help local emergency service organizations replace aging vehicles, purchase critical equipment and address other operational needs.

The allocations include hundreds of thousands of dollars for local ambulance corps, $380,000 for the Thiells Fire Department toward the purchase of a new search-and-rescue vehicle, and $950,000 for Nyack General Fire Protection Company No. 2 to construct affordable housing for volunteer first responders.

“Our first responders are vital to our community,” Carroll said, adding that he is proud to support the volunteers who dedicate their time to keeping residents safe.

Carroll said that while available funding cannot cover every need facing local emergency agencies, he remains committed to working with first responder organizations to secure additional funding in the years ahead.

An MVA involving an overturned van occurred on Eros Drive earlier today. Emergency personnel responded to the scene, and minor injuries were reported.

A 15-year-old boy was injured Friday evening in a crash involving a Talaria electric motorbike and a Toyota Camry at Route 303 and East Erie Street. Rockland Paramedics and South Orangetown Ambulance Corps responded, and the teen was transported to Westchester Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene, and Orangetown Police’s Accident Investigation Team is investigating.

Firefighters and other emergency personnel are on the scene of a structure fire at 22 Termakay Drive. The fire reportedly began in the attic of the two-story building, which has solar panels on the roof.

Ramapo Police, along with a K-9 unit, responded to Yeshiva Spring Valley on College Road following a report of a suspicious briefcase left outside the school. After an investigation, the briefcase was deemed not suspicious and was determined to have been mistakenly left behind by a teacher. An all-clear was given.

A vehicle lost control and went down an embankment near Cherry Lane and Beaver Hollow Lane earlier today. Ramapo Police responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.

The Town of Ramapo Highway Department has begun tearing down its aging salt storage facility as work moves forward on a larger replacement ahead of the upcoming winter season.

Demolition work got underway Friday, with heavy machinery removing portions of the roughly 25-year-old structure, which has served as the Highway Department’s primary storage location for road salt used during snow and ice events throughout the town.

Ramapo Superintendent of Highways Fred Brinn said the facility had reached the point where replacement was necessary after deterioration developed around its foundation. The new structure is being funded through a combination of grant funding and money allocated by the Ramapo Town Board.

The current shed had capacity for approximately 4,000 tons of salt. Its replacement will significantly expand that capacity to approximately 5,500 tons, while providing improved protection for the town’s salt supply from rain and other weather conditions.

Construction is expected to be completed by mid-October, allowing the new facility to be operational before winter weather arrives.

During construction, the Rockland County Highway Department is assisting Ramapo by temporarily storing the town’s salt supply. Brinn expressed his appreciation to the county Highway Department and Superintendent Skip Vezzetti for helping accommodate the town while the project is underway.

The project is part of the Highway Department’s preparations for the winter season, when crews use thousands of tons of salt to keep Ramapo roadways treated during snowstorms and icy conditions.

Chaverim Of Rockland officially unveiled its new state-of-the-art dispatch headquarters Thursday night with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held during the organization’s annual Members Appreciation BBQ at its headquarters on Saddle River Road.

The well-attended evening brought together Chaverim members and dispatchers, law enforcement officials, elected officials, community leaders and friends of the organization to celebrate the volunteers who respond to thousands of calls throughout Rockland County each year and to mark the opening of the upgraded dispatch facility.

The new dispatch center represents a major investment in Chaverim’s emergency response capabilities, providing its dispatchers with a modern, dedicated headquarters designed to improve communications and coordination as the organization continues to handle a growing volume of calls across the community.

Chaverim Of Rockland also expressed its appreciation to the many businesses and supporters who helped make the new dispatch headquarters possible. An MVA involving a taxi occurred late Friday afternoon on Viola Road near Route 306. Spring Hill EMS and Ramapo Police responded to the scene. Minor injuries were reported.

A person was stabbed Thursday evening on Rosehill Oval following a fight. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived. Spring Hill EMS, Spring Valley Police and Rockland Paramedics responded, and minor injuries were reported. Spring Valley Police are investigating the incident.

An MVA occurred at New Clarkstown Road and Smith Road. Hatzoloh EMS, Nanuet EMS, Clarkstown Police and the Spring Valley Fire Department responded to the scene. Minor injuries were reported.

A large crowd of residents, business owners, contractors and community leaders turned out Thursday night in New Hempstead for a meet-and-greet with State Senate candidate Joe Rand. The discussion focused on rising costs, regulations, permitting and ways to make Rockland County more business-friendly. New Hempstead Mayor Abe Sicker, local Rabbanim, elected officials and community leaders were among those in attendance.

The Ramapo Police Department will host a Car Seat Safety Inspection on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Ramapo Town Hall from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

A disturbing antisemitic Facebook comment targeting Assemblyman Aron Wieder and the broader Orthodox Jewish community is under review by Rockland County law enforcement after appearing Thursday morning in response to a Monsey Scoop report.

The comment was posted on Facebook beneath Monsey Scoop’s report on Assemblyman Aron Wieder securing $500,000 for public safety and community improvements in Piermont. The funding includes money for a new search-and-rescue boat, road improvements and playground equipment.

The comment contained an antisemitic slur directed at Wieder as well as threatening language aimed at the entire Orthodox Jewish community. Monsey Scoop removed the comment from its Facebook page after it was seen and preserved, and it was promptly shared with law enforcement.

Due to the seriousness of the language, and because Wieder later read the comment publicly before law enforcement officials, Monsey Scoop is publishing its wording, with one offensive word partially censored, so readers can understand what prompted the law enforcement response:

“So the state just ratified a contract with the CSCEA. We have been working without a contract since 2019. Not one penny of our raise has been paid to us. This Jew b****** is getting 19 million dollars here, 500k there. Do we need to make the entire ultra Orthodox Jewish community go extinct before we get dime one? Let us know, because we can eradicate the entire population in one to two weeks.”

Hours later, Wieder addressed the comment during Thursday evening’s Community Security Initiatives High Holidays Security Briefing in Monsey, where law enforcement officials, security professionals and community leaders had gathered to discuss preparedness and coordination ahead of the upcoming Yomim Tovim.

“Now, I want to read something that was posted today on a very informative local website, the Monsey Scoop,” Wieder told those gathered. “I have to apologize in advance for how raw and disturbing the language is. I’m not reading it to spread hate or to shock anyone. I’m reading it simply because this is the reality we are facing, and it’s important that our law enforcement partners throughout the region understand what the Jewish community is seeing and hearing.”

Wieder then read the Facebook comment aloud to those in attendance.

Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh also addressed the incident, stressing that there is no place for hate in Rockland County. Walsh said the matter is being reviewed to determine whether any criminal laws were violated and indicated that if there is a legal basis to prosecute, his office will do so.

Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco said his office is also looking into the matter and that the Sheriff’s Intelligence Unit is working to identify the individual behind the Facebook comment.

The incident came as officials were already gathered to discuss security across Rockland County ahead of the High Holidays. Thursday’s briefing included representatives from the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, New York State Police, FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and local police departments, along with emergency organizations and community leaders.

The matter remains under review by law enforcement as authorities work to identify the person responsible for the post and determine whether further action is warranted.

A delivery truck struck electrical wires outside RHP Hardware on Robert Pitt Drive at approximately 8:30 a.m., causing heavy sparks and knocking out power to the store. Orange & Rockland responded and disconnected the damaged electrical service while repairs got underway. Despite the outage, RHP remained open as the store prepares for its busy Sukkos season beginning Sunday. Chaverim Of Rockland quickly brought a large emergency generator and temporary lighting, allowing the store to continue operating and preparing for the upcoming Sukkos rush.

The Village of Spring Valley will receive $1.5 million in state funding to overhaul its Department of Public Works fleet, an investment officials say is critical to restoring basic services and preparing for the winter ahead.

The funding was secured by Assemblyman Aron Wieder following a meeting last week with Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Mayor Shenley Vital, Deputy Mayor Yisroel Eisenbach and Trustee Y.Y. Kaufman.

The allocation will be used to purchase new snow plows, street sweepers and other essential equipment to replace aging machinery that has left the DPW struggling to keep up.

Village leaders said last winter exposed just how dire the situation had become, with equipment failures hampering snow removal and street maintenance across the community.

“We have just concluded a very successful meeting with the Speaker, the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor and Trustees,” Wieder said. “It’s summer and it’s hot, but around the corner there will be snow — and maybe a lot of it. We saw the difficulties we had during the last snowstorm. I’m grateful the Speaker committed to helping the village.”

Mayor Vital said the Speaker’s visit was an important opportunity to share the village’s concerns directly.

“Last winter was a tough winter for us,” Vital said. “We have a wonderful partner in Assemblyman Wieder and the Speaker of the Assembly. They will be helping us bring the necessary equipment to rebuild our DPW and deliver the services our residents deserve. We are so thankful for their support.”

Wieder credited the mayor’s leadership for visible progress in the village in less than a year.

Deputy Mayor Eisenbach called the funding a major milestone for the village.

“This is a huge step forward for Spring Valley and a real investment in our residents’ quality of life,” Eisenbach said. “We are deeply thankful to Assemblyman Wieder for his strong advocacy in securing this grant and to the Speaker for stepping up for our village. With the Mayor’s leadership, we are getting Spring Valley back on track.”

Officials described Speaker Heastie as warm and engaged, listening closely to the challenges facing the village and committing to help bring services back to normal standards.

Village leaders said the investment will significantly strengthen winter operations, improve cleanliness and quality of life, and support ongoing efforts to rebuild Spring Valley.

“This is a team effort, and I want to thank Deputy Mayor Eisenbach and Trustee Kaufman,” Vital said. “We are proud to be leading Spring Valley into the future. The best is yet to come.”

A multi-vehicle MVA occurred earlier at Route 59 and Hemion Road. Faist EMS, the Tallman Fire Department, and Ramapo Police responded to the scene. Injuries were reported.

Law enforcement officials, security professionals, and community leaders gathered Thursday evening at YSV Boys School on College Road for the Community Security Initiative’s 2026 High Holidays Security Briefing, focused on strengthening security, preparedness, and coordination ahead of the upcoming Yomim Tovim.

The event, coordinated by the Jewish Federation of Rockland County, was led by Ethan Erlich, Regional Security Director for the Community Security Initiative, and brought together representatives from law enforcement agencies, emergency organizations, community groups, shuls, yeshivos, and schools from across Rockland County.

Among the agencies and organizations represented were the Rockland County Police Chiefs Association, Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, Rockland County District Attorney’s Office, New York State Police, FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, Chaverim Of Rockland, Hatzoloh, New Square Emergency Services, Anti-Defamation League, Agudath Israel, Jewish Federation, as well as representatives from the towns of Ramapo, Clarkstown, Haverstraw, Stony Point, and Orangetown and local police departments throughout the county.

The meeting focused on the current security environment, preparedness for the High Holidays, and the importance of close coordination between law enforcement and local institutions during a period when shuls and other community facilities are expected to see increased activity.

Officials discussed the importance of remaining vigilant, promptly reporting suspicious activity, reviewing security procedures, and maintaining direct lines of communication between community leaders and public safety agencies.

The Community Security Initiative works closely with more than 150 institutions across Rockland County, providing security assessments, training, event guidance, and coordination with law enforcement.

Thursday evening’s gathering follows a similar security briefing held ahead of Pesach earlier this year and reflects the ongoing partnership between Rockland County law enforcement and community organizations in preparing for major periods on the Jewish calendar.

The briefing once again highlighted the close working relationship between local agencies and community organizations as preparations continue for the upcoming High Holidays.

Shvil HaChesed, which assists patients with transportation to and from hospitals, held a member appreciation event Thursday evening in recognition of its dedicated volunteers.

The Eruv of Monsey released its weekly inspection report ahead of Shabbos Parshas Netzavim-Vayeilech, with inspectors identifying 14 issues across the Eruv system. Six were determined to be not kosher and required immediate attention, two were classified as high-priority, and the remaining issues were lower-priority maintenance items.

Following the completion of this week’s repairs, officials confirmed that all sections of the Eruv are kosher for Shabbos.

In Airmont, crews completed two repairs along East Crescent Avenue after wires were damaged and the PVC at the top was found to be in poor condition. Two new PVCs were installed to restore the area.

In Pearl River, a PVC along South Highland Avenue that was broken near the bottom was repaired.

In Montebello, crews completed two repairs along Route 202 near Coe Farm Road, where branches had become tangled in the Eruv string. The branches were removed and the line was restored.

In New City, crews repaired a broken PVC along New Hempstead Road.

Five repairs were completed in the Haverstraw Eruv. Along Route 202 at Rosman Road, crews removed branches that were pushing against the Eruv wire. In Pomona, utility work along Call Hollow Road changed the locations of two utility poles, requiring Eruv crews to install four new PVC lechis to accommodate the new configuration.

The Suffern, Good Samaritan Hospital Rambam, Chestnut Ridge, both Monsey Rambam sections, Spring Valley, Spring Valley Rambam, Nanuet Rambam, Wesley Hills, New Hempstead, and Hillcrest sections were all inspected and confirmed kosher without any significant repairs noted.

Eruv officials also addressed the absence of weekly reports over the previous two weeks, stressing that inspections and maintenance continued as usual during that period. All sections were checked, necessary repairs were completed, and the Eruv was confirmed kosher each week.

Officials additionally expressed their appreciation to Joel Sofer for his continued assistance with issues involving the Eruv maintenance truck.

With this week’s inspections and repairs completed, officials confirmed that the entire Monsey Eruv system is fully kosher and operational for Shabbos.

Rockland County was prominently represented at Thursday’s historic White House gathering, as leading Rabbonim, Admorim, elected officials and community activists met with President Donald Trump and senior administration officials ahead of Rosh Hashanah.

Among the central participants from Rockland County were the Viznitzer Rebbe of Monsey and HaRav Aron Mendel Twersky, eldest son of the Skverer Rebbe, who represented his father at the gathering. The broader rabbinic delegation included both Satmar Rebbes, the Bobover Rebbe and HaGaon HaRav Malkiel Kotler, Rosh Yeshiva of Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood.

But the Rockland connection extended well beyond the Rabbonim.

Monsey Scoop has learned that longtime community activist Yossi Gestetner played a central role in bringing the historic gathering together, working together with White House Jewish liaison Martin Marks to coordinate the Rabbonim and Admorim with the White House. Gestetner was on hand throughout Thursday’s gathering and played a leading role during the visit.

Marks, whose official White House title is Special Assistant to the President for Jewish Outreach, had been working for months on arrangements for the meeting. The gathering was designed to give some of the largest Chassidishe and Torah communities in the United States direct access to the president and senior administration officials ahead of Rosh Hashanah.

Gestetner also addressed reporters following the meeting, describing the visit as a rare opportunity for the president to meet face-to-face with leaders representing some of the country’s largest Chassidishe communities.

A sizable group of additional Rockland County officials and community figures made the trip to Washington.

New Square Mayor Izzy Spitzer accompanied HaRav Aron Mendel Twersky, with the two departing earlier Thursday aboard a private jet from Teterboro Airport.

Airmont Trustee Yehuda Zorger attended together with his Rebbe, the Satmar Rebbe of Kiryas Joel, while Kaser Mayor Eli Pinkasowitz was also part of the Rockland County contingent.

Congressman Mike Lawler, whose district includes much of Rockland County, participated in the White House gathering as well, together with his Deputy Chief of Staff Rafi Silberberg. Lawler was present during the historic Oval Office portion of the visit with President Trump.

The visit began with a gathering in the Roosevelt Room, where Marks opened the meeting and White House Staff Secretary Will Scharf addressed those assembled. Vice President JD Vance later joined the group, personally greeting the Rabbonim and participants and discussing the Orthodox community’s emphasis on family and education.

The delegation subsequently proceeded to the Oval Office for its meeting with President Trump. Jared Kushner joined that portion of the gathering, while the president met directly with the senior Rabbonim and heard from members of the delegation on issues affecting frum communities across the country.

Among the issues discussed during the broader White House gathering were religious and educational concerns, the needs of Jewish prisoners, and other matters impacting Orthodox communities.

HaRav Aron Mendel Twersky spoke briefly during the Oval Office meeting and delivered a letter to President Trump on behalf of the Skverer Rebbe. Trump inquired about the Skverer Rebbe’s well-being.

For Rockland County, Thursday’s gathering was particularly notable: from the Viznitzer and Skverer communities to local elected officials, congressional representatives and community activists, the county had an unusually significant presence in a historic meeting at the White House — with individuals from the Monsey area playing roles not only as attendees, but in helping bring the gathering together in the first place.

Hundreds of East Ramapo families picked up free backpacks and school supplies Wednesday morning at the district’s Back-to-School Fair at Spring Valley High School.

Assemblyman Aron Wieder joined the event hosted by the East Ramapo Family Welcome Center, which ran from 9 a.m. to noon at 361 Route 59. Wieder partnered with the Community Outreach Center, under Rabbi Horowitz, to sponsor school supplies through state funding secured for the organization. Backpacks were provided by other donors through the Family Resource Center.

While at the fair, Wieder met with new Superintendent Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez and school board member Sabrina Charles-Pierre to discuss continued support for students in the Assembly. His office also operated a mobile constituent services table to assist residents with state agencies.

Standing with organizers from the Family Resource Center, Wieder praised the work on the ground.

“I’m here with Christine and Jackie of the Family Resource Center in East Ramapo, where they’re doing such a wonderful job,” Wieder said. “I’m amazed at the kind of work they do handing out backpacks and school supplies. I’m really lucky to be able to partner with such wonderful people.”

“I hope this is going to be the first of many years where we will be able to help the kids get a good head start in school and a head start in life,” he added.

Organizers thanked Wieder for his support. “We couldn’t have done the event without your generous donation,” one organizer said, noting families were “very thankful and very appreciative.”

Wieder closed by highlighting the partnership, saying, “East Ramapo is such a wonderful district because of such wonderful people.”

The Clarkstown Police Department recently welcomed representatives from a range of local faith communities for an open house hosted by the department’s CaReS Unit.

Chief Fay welcomed attendees to the event, which was designed to give community leaders a firsthand look at what residents can expect when contacting the police department for assistance, whether during an emergency or regarding a community concern.

Participants heard from members of the department’s Communications Center, Detective Bureau, Office of Emergency Management, Community Police Unit and CIRT Team, and learned about the services, training opportunities and resources offered by the department.

Officials also explained how Clarkstown Police personnel coordinate and respond during real-time emergencies, giving attendees a closer look at the department’s day-to-day public safety operations.

The department thanked Supervisor George Hoehmann and the Clarkstown Town Board for their continued support of the CaReS Unit, which works to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the diverse communities served throughout the town.

Police officials also thanked the faith leaders who participated in the program and said the event helped further strengthen communication and cooperation between the department and local religious communities.

The Thiells Fire Department has released updated drone photos showing construction progress on its new main station, 26-100. The project is expected to be completed in December.

It is certainly nice to see the attention now being given to the successful Clarkstown transportation arrangement. After more than three years of work, meetings, phone calls, setbacks, negotiations, and persistence, something that many believed would never happen has finally become a reality.

And there is plenty of credit to go around.

Agudath Israel played a role. Senator Bill Weber and other elected officials played a role. Kol Yisroel and Shmulie Hartstein played an important role. Rockland BOCES, IMS Transportation, Clarkstown officials, Yeshiva of Spring Valley, and others contributed at different stages of the process.

Nobody should take anything away from any of them.

But now that press releases are being issued, articles are being published, and emails are circulating thanking those who helped, there should at minimum be an effort to acknowledge the people who were involved from the beginning until the very end.

For a handful of parents, this effort has now been going on for more than 40 months.

These were parents who quietly carried this issue from start to finish.

They did not issue press releases. They did not seek publicity. Most people never knew their names.

They were simply trying to solve a very real problem for their own children, their neighbors, and their community.

They made the calls. They attended the meetings. They communicated with the district. They followed up when things stalled. They worked through one obstacle after another. They sat down with the necessary parties again and again and continued pushing until an actual solution was reached.

There was no fanfare and no expectation of recognition.

But if we are going to tell the story of how this happened, that part of the story cannot be left out.

There is also a separate and extremely important aspect of this accomplishment that deserves recognition.

At the point when this issue required real leadership and a workable solution, Clarkstown Superintendent Dr. Marc P. Baiocco and Jordana Medici, Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools, stepped up to the plate.

They did not simply become involved and then leave the details to others.

They did not simply refer the parents to other people in their respective departments or within the district and consider the matter handled.

They personally engaged.

They met with these parents multiple times. They made themselves available after hours, early in the morning, and during the summer. They stayed in constant communication. They worked through problems as they arose. And they remained directly involved until the arrangement was finally completed.

That matters.

It would have been very easy for people in their positions to say that transportation belongs to another department, assign it to staff, and move on.

Instead, they took ownership of the issue and helped drive it toward a solution.

Regardless of whether someone believes that falls within the technical responsibilities of their positions, the level of personal attention, accessibility, and involvement they gave to these families deserves to be acknowledged.

Yeshiva of Spring Valley’s original communication described more than two years of extensive work, numerous meetings, discussions with multiple agencies, a formal bidding process, and several high level approvals. It thanked Clarkstown officials, Rockland BOCES, Clarkstown transportation personnel, COC, Agudah, IMS, and others.

A subsequent communication appropriately added Shmulie Hartstein of Kol Yisroel, acknowledging that he had been instrumental in many aspects of the work and coordination.

That acknowledgement was deserved.

But the same standard should apply to everyone.

No one needs to lose credit in order for the people who quietly did the work to receive theirs.

So appreciation is certainly due to Agudath Israel, Senator Weber and the other elected officials who assisted, Kol Yisroel, YSV, IMS, BOCES, Clarkstown, and everyone else who helped move this effort forward.

But particular recognition belongs to the handful of parents who were there from the beginning, stayed with it for more than 40 months, and saw it through to the end.

And separate recognition belongs to Dr. Baiocco and Jordana Medici, who, when a solution was needed, did not simply pass the issue along.

They stepped up to the plate, became personally involved, and helped get it done.

They may not all be the names appearing in the headlines.

But any complete account of how this was accomplished should include them.

Assemblyman Aron Wieder has secured $500,000 in state funding for a series of public safety and quality-of-life improvements in the Village of Piermont, including a new search-and-rescue boat, road improvements and new playground equipment.

Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie joined Wieder and Piermont Mayor Nathan Mitchell for a recent visit to the historic Piermont Pier as part of Heastie’s annual statewide tour.

The $500,000 commitment includes $200,000 for a new search-and-rescue boat to strengthen emergency response capabilities along the Hudson River, $200,000 for road repairs at the Piermont Pier, and $100,000 for new children’s park equipment.

The 4,000-foot Piermont Pier, originally built in the mid-1800s as the terminus of the Erie Railroad, has since become a popular destination for residents and visitors for fishing, recreation and views of the Hudson River.

“The Piermont Pier is truly a hidden gem along the Hudson River that offers residents and visitors a unique experience of the river for recreation, fishing and just taking in the scenery,” Heastie said during the visit.

Wieder said ensuring Hudson River communities have the resources necessary to protect residents and visitors remains a priority.

“I was proud to show Speaker Heastie Orangetown, one of the many great waterfront resources along the Hudson River in the community and the efforts of local government to protect the safety and well-being of residents and visitors who enjoy the river every day,” Wieder said.

“Being a Hudson River community, I will always work to ensure Piermont and the surrounding community have the resources they need, especially for emergency situations,” he added.

The latest funding comes shortly after Wieder secured an additional $150,000 for Piermont, including $50,000 to upgrade police and fire department radios and $100,000 for drainage improvements on Ritie Street.

Supervisor George Hoehmann and members of the Town Board stood at Dellwood Park today and spoke on the town’s partnership with the Pavement Management Group (PMG), diving into the comprehensive paving plan PMG is actively implementing for the Town of Clarkstown.

PMG is a nationally recognized road infrastructure management company which uses innovative technologies to assess roadway conditions and uses objective methods to determine which roads are in most need of paving and how that fits into the long-term budget forecast for future paving seasons.

The first phase of the paving management plan, involving video recording of every town road, has been completed. PMG deployed their on-the-ground video technology and captured HD footage of every single roadway under the jurisdiction of the Town of Clarkstown and uploaded this footage into the paving management software program.

Currently, PMG is near completion on the evaluation phase, which will include their automated distress detection system to provide a highly-detailed assessment of conditions for each roadway in order to determine how they will be cataloged into their standardized grading scale. The software score is then checked and verified by a team of engineers to ensure accuracy. This grading scale system will be publicly accessible in the coming weeks.

The grading scale categorizes roads into five tiers ranging from “Failed” to “Excellent.” Each score is based on the type of pavement distress—of which there are 20 recognized defects—including the severity of the conditions, and the extent of roadway affected. Scores for all town roads will be uploaded to a database accessible to both municipal employees and the public. This will promote transparency and provide a clear explanation of where paving funds are being allocated.

This method was developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1970s to establish an objective measure of the conditions of roads and parking lots. It was later adopted, standardized, and published by ASTM International. Today, the system is used by local and state governments, as well as airports, across the United States.

Supervisor Hoehmann and members of the Town Board were joined by residents of Doral Court and adjacent neighborhoods who have expressed concerns regarding the lengthy delays in the paving of their streets. At the April 14th Town Board meeting, Highway Superintendent Bob Milone was authorized with $3.844 million in paving funding from the Town Board consisting of serial bonds and the cost-shares program.

Under New York State Law, the Highway Superintendent retains sole, independent statutory authority in determining how highway maintenance and repair work is carried out. At this time, The Highway Superintendent claims he no longer has sufficient funds to complete paving for the aforementioned streets, yet has failed to show that he has exhausted this year’s funding allocation. Further, any statements claiming that the Town Board has prohibited the Highway Superintendent from paving any streets in the midst of planned or current utility work such as water main replacement by Veolia are incorrect and irresponsible.

The Town Board recognizes the importance of maintaining our roads and addressing necessary repairs and is distressed by the potential mismanagement of funding by the Highway Department. This new scoring system will provide objective data to the public in the interest of transparency. The Town Board is also actively examining and seeking to implement further fiscal controls and oversight measures, as allowed by law, to promote greater accountability in the expenditure of highway funds and to help prevent similar funding issues in the future. These controls will work in tandem with the budget forecast produced by PMG to ensure paving funds are allocated efficiently and appropriately.

Supervisor George Hoehmann stated, “The Town Board and I are committed to protecting taxpayers and we’re thrilled to launch a new era of transparency in roadway maintenance. The days of ‘paving patronage’ are over. Residents will now be able to see exactly where their road ranks as compared to others. We now have a state-of-the-art, sophisticated, data-driven system to drive paving decisions. This is a tremendous quality of life improvement for the residents of Clarkstown.”

Councilman Jon Valentino stated, “As your Ward 1 councilman, I will continue to advocate for residents on their behalf so that they receive the high-quality infrastructure they deserve. I am proud that we are taking steps by working with PMG to provide Clarkstown residents with innovative, modernized solutions that ensure their tax dollars are put to proper use.”

Councilman Mike Graziano stated, “For years, Clarkstown residents have complained about the lack of transparency and accountability regarding how decisions are made when it comes to re-paving our roads. That ends today. Having a measurable, objective scoring system will take all the subjectivity out of the process. This is a win for everyone; the roads that are in the greatest need of paving will be objectively identified and prioritized. Our tax dollars will be spent where they’re needed most.”

Councilman Don Franchino stated, “This new system represents a remarkable change for the better in our town. There’ll be no more guesswork or favoritism involved in deciding which roads should be paved in a given year going forward. If a resident wants to know why other roads were paved before theirs, they’ll be able to look at the scores and see the reason for themselves. The scoring system provides a welcome level of transparency we’ve never had before.”

Councilman Bob Axelrod stated, “My fellow members of the Town Board and I are committed to maintaining robust public services for all residents of Clarkstown, regardless of who you know. The implementation of this system will do just that. Going forward, taxpayers will be protected from any potential mismanagement of their hard-earned money. The days of residents having their own street skipped over for several paving seasons with no explanation, are over. I want to extend my sincere thanks to PMG for their partnership with the Town of Clarkstown.”

There is something that has been bothering me for a while, and I really feel that it is time for parents to start speaking up.

What is happening with the school calendar in our private mosdos?

Every year, it seems that there are more and more days off. This is happening from playgroups, to schools, and even cheder. At the same time, tuition continues to increase.

Of course our children deserve vacations, and of course teachers deserve time off. Nobody is questioning that. But there needs to be a reasonable balance.

Between Yom Tovim, Chanukah vacation, midwinter vacation, days off before and after camp, and shortened summer programs, the amount of time children are not in a structured program has become excessive.

Personally, my children recently had two full weeks off between programs. I honestly don’t remember this ever being the norm. And this is becoming a recurring issue.

Why do we need three days of Chanukah vacation and then another three days of midwinter? We already have so many Yom Tovim and other breaks throughout the year. Could some of these vacations be shortened?

And what happened to summer programs? Why are day camps becoming shorter and shorter, sometimes less than eight weeks? Parents are still working throughout the summer. Our responsibilities don’t become less because school programs become shorter.

This is especially difficult for working mothers.

Playgroups were always known to be one of the more accommodating options for working parents. Now we are hearing more and more that teachers need additional breaks. Again, I completely respect the hard work teachers do and understand that they need time off. But working mothers need consideration too.

Many mothers work in offices, stores, businesses, and other jobs where they don’t have the flexibility to simply take another day off every time school or playgroup is closed.

And this isn’t just about the parents. Our children need structure.

Children thrive on routine and consistency. We are living in a very different generation than we were years ago, and giving children endless unstructured days isn’t necessarily what’s best for them either. In fact, children themselves can become frustrated when they don’t have their normal routine.

So I really want to ask: Where is the balance?

Why does it seem that every year the number of days off increases, while tuition increases as well?

Is there anyone looking at the school calendar as a whole and asking whether this is still reasonable for families?

Maybe it’s time for parents to respectfully start asking these questions instead of simply accepting that “this is how it is.”

Our teachers deserve respect. Our children deserve structure. And our parents—especially those who are working—deserve consideration too.

Something needs to change, and it starts with parents being willing to speak up.

The Village of Spring Valley Board has approved moving forward with a new system that would allow motorists to receive plea bargain offers by mail, potentially eliminating the need to appear in person to meet with a prosecutor.

Under the proposed process, a motorist who receives a traffic ticket would be able to return the ticket with a not-guilty plea and, when eligible, receive a plea offer through the mail.

The system, already used by a number of other municipalities, is intended to make the process more convenient while reducing unnecessary trips, waiting times and administrative headaches for motorists and village officials.

Village officials said the board has approved beginning the process of implementing the program and are hopeful the new system will prove successful.

The Town of Ramapo Planning Board recently voted unanimously to approve the installation of eight Level 3 electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot of Evergreen Town Square in Monsey, marking a significant expansion of fast-charging infrastructure in the area.

The application was approved by a 7-0 vote. According to officials, Orange & Rockland has already reviewed and approved the project, clearing another major hurdle ahead of installation, which is expected to move forward in the coming weeks or months.

Level 3 chargers, also known as DC fast chargers, are significantly faster than standard home or public charging stations and can typically charge many electric vehicles from roughly 10% to 80% in approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the vehicle and charger.

“This is a major addition for the neighborhood,” Ramapo Planning Board Chairman Yisroel Eisenbach told Monsey Scoop. “There is a clear need for additional fast-charging options in the area, and the board understood that need. We were pleased to unanimously approve a project that will provide an important and convenient service for residents.”

The location at Evergreen Town Square will allow EV drivers to charge their vehicles while shopping or visiting businesses in the busy shopping center, providing a convenient new charging option for Monsey-area residents.

State Senate candidate Joe Rand will hold a community meet-and-greet tomorrow evening in New Hempstead, continuing a series of stops across Rockland County aimed at meeting residents and hearing their priorities.

The event, hosted by Pinny Kohn at the Kohn Residence, 10 Salem Ct., New Hempstead, is scheduled for Thursday, September 3, at 8:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and everyone is welcome.

The gathering follows recent meet-and-greets in Pomona, Montebello, and Chestnut Ridge as Rand continues bringing his campaign directly to communities across the county.

Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County has received one of its ambulances back following a complete remount onto a new, updated chassis. The remounted ambulance joins two brand-new ambulances received several weeks ago. As part of Hatzoloh’s ongoing fleet modernization, all three are expected to be fully equipped, inspected, and placed into service in the coming weeks.

Assemblyman Aron Wieder brought his mobile office to Orangetown on Monday, meeting with residents in the Town Hall Board Meeting Room while hosting a back-to-school supply giveaway for local families.

Residents sat down one-on-one with the Assemblyman and his staff to raise concerns, ask questions, and get help navigating state agencies. At the same time, a large number of families with school-age children stopped by to pick up fully stocked bags of school supplies for the new school year.

A 19-year-old Newburgh man has died from injuries sustained in a serious single-vehicle crash Tuesday morning on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in the Town of Stony Point, New York State Police announced.

The crash, which was first reported by Monsey Scoop Tuesday morning, occurred at approximately 9:46 a.m. on the southbound Palisades Interstate Parkway near Exit 16.

According to State Police, a 2010 Toyota Corolla was traveling southbound near mile marker 31.3 when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway, entered the center median and crashed into a tree.

Police said it was raining at the time of the crash and the roadway was wet.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was identified as Christopher A. Rivera, 19, of Newburgh. Rivera was extricated from the vehicle and transported by Rockland Hatzoloh EMS to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

New York State Park Police and New York State Troopers from the Haverstraw barracks responded to the scene.

The investigation into what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway remains ongoing.

Anyone who personally witnessed the crash is asked to contact the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Haverstraw at 845-344-5300.

Injuries are the leading cause of death for children in New York State, which claim thousands of lives statewide each year. This September 1–7, the Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) joins communities across New York and the nation in observing National Childhood Injury Prevention Week.

This awareness week reminds parents and caregivers that simple steps can keep children safe at home, at play, and on the go. Common causes of childhood injury include motor vehicle crashes, suffocation, drowning, poisoning, burns, and falls.

“Many childhood injuries can be prevented by following simple safety steps,” said Dr. Mary Leahy, Rockland County Commissioner of Health. “Using the correct car seat, keeping dangerous items out of reach, and watching children closely can help prevent serious injuries.”

Some safety tips for parents and caregivers to help protect children:

• Check your child’s car seat. Install the seat correctly. Make sure it does not move more than one inch from side to side when you pull on the base.
• Secure TVs and furniture. Mount flat-screen TVs to the wall. Place heavier TVs on low, sturdy furniture to prevent tip-overs. Secure dressers to the wall.
• Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Test alarms every month. Replace batteries if needed. Replace alarms every 10 years.
• Keep medicine and small batteries out of reach. Store medicines high up and locked away. Keep batteries away from children. If swallowed, batteries can cause serious injuries.
• Limit distractions. Put your phone away when driving, walking with children, or watching them play. Focus on your child and your surroundings.
• Help children stay visible. Dress children in bright or reflective clothing. Use lights or reflective gear in low-light conditions to help others see them.

The Rockland County Healthy Neighborhoods Program offers free home visits to eligible residents, including low-income families, older adults, and households at higher risk, to identify health and safety concerns and help families make their homes safer. Chaverim Of Rockland Search and Rescue teams carried out a woods rescue Sunday after an injured hiker became unable to safely make his way out on his own.

The hiker reported that his knee had buckled while walking in a wooded area near Rockland County. Despite significant pain, he initially hoped to continue limping out and contacted rescuers to determine whether there was a faster or shorter route back.

As Chaverim Of Rockland Search and Rescue teams worked to pinpoint his exact location, the hiker sent a GPS image shortly before his phone battery died. During continued communication, he reported that his knee felt as though it was grinding whenever he placed weight on it.

Although the hiker initially wanted to continue walking with the help of two sticks, rescuers determined that doing so could worsen the injury. Chaverim personnel convinced him to stop moving and remain in place until Search and Rescue teams could reach him.

Once crews arrived, the steep terrain and the hiker’s condition made a walkout unsafe. Chaverim Of Rockland Search and Rescue teams placed him into a specialized rescue stretcher designed for difficult terrain and carried him out of the woods.

The hiker was successfully brought out without further incident. Despite the painful knee injury, there was no obvious dislocation or other visible trauma, and he declined an ambulance and additional medical attention following the rescue.

Keren Olam Hachinuch (KOH), the national initiative created to address the growing financial pressures facing Torah mosdos and families, is moving into its next phase with the launch of a new scholarship system designed to provide meaningful tuition relief directly to families.

As Monsey Scoop reported when the initiative launched in July, KOH was established with a business-minded, Klal Yisroel-wide approach to the tuition crisis: gathering accurate financial information from mosdos, identifying the true needs of schools and families, and developing practical solutions based on real data.

In a new statement, KOH said that while tremendous efforts are already being made by Rabbanim, askanim, school leaders, parents and baalei tzedakah to support Torah chinuch across America, rising operating costs, growing enrollment and increasing tuition burdens continue to place significant pressure on both families and mosdos.

The organization says it is working with mosdos to better understand enrollment, tuition, operating costs and budget gaps, with the goal of creating new revenue opportunities and directing communal resources where they can have the greatest impact.

A central part of that effort will be KOH’s new scholarship system. According to the organization, communal funds will be raised and directed toward tuition through participating mosdos, providing assistance to hardworking families across income levels who are struggling to make their tuition obligations work.

Families can already submit preliminary information through KOH’s website. KOH notes that this is not yet a formal scholarship application, and those who submit their information will be notified once formal applications become available.

KOH is also inviting parents, educators, askanim, business leaders and community members to take part in the effort, share ideas and help build a broader communal solution to the growing tuition burden.

“We have already seen what Klal Yisroel can accomplish when we come together for Torah in Eretz Yisroel,” KOH said in its statement. “If we can do it there, we can do it here too.”

Earlier today, Ramapo Police conducted pedestrian safety enforcement at Main Street and Grove Street, with plainclothes officers posing as pedestrians in the crosswalk to identify drivers who failed to stop. Construction on College Road near Carlton Road has closed one lane, causing traffic delays in the area. Motorists should use caution and expect slowdowns.

The Town of Clarkstown on Monday provided an update regarding multiple ongoing investigations involving the town’s Department of Engineering and Facilities Management (DEFM), saying the probes include an internal investigation, an independent ethics investigation and an external criminal investigation involving town employees and outside vendors.

According to the town, the investigations center on alleged misconduct connected to DEFM. Officials said employees who have been placed on leave are prohibited from using town resources while the investigations remain pending, while vendors suspected of misconduct are barred from working on or bidding for additional town projects during the probes.

The town also alleged that there has been a coordinated effort through online forums, social media accounts and public statements to influence or interfere with the investigations. Officials said they are releasing as much information as legally permitted while seeking to protect the integrity of the ongoing probes.

Clarkstown officials said Deputy Supervisor Al Moroni helped uncover some of the alleged misconduct involving employees and vendors and is serving as a key witness as investigators work to determine the full scope of the matter. The town said Moroni has been publicly targeted by individuals critical of the investigation and stressed that employees working to protect taxpayers would not be intimidated.

The statement also criticized Highway Superintendent Bob Milone for publicly commenting on the matter and filing complaint letters, saying he has no oversight or involvement with DEFM. The town additionally noted that Milone was the sole recommender for the hiring of the now-suspended DEFM director.

The Town Board said it will continue exercising oversight and holding employees and vendors accountable, adding that further updates will be released when doing so will not interfere with the investigations.

The library will open from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 4, for staff development, and will be closed on Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day.

On Friday, September 11, Erev Rosh Hashanah, the library will operate on a shortened schedule from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The library will also be closed on Monday, September 21, for Yom Kippur.

In addition, officials announced that the library will be closed on Saturdays beginning September 5, as well as on Sundays from September 6 through October 4, in an effort to manage resources effectively.

The library’s Board of Trustees will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, September 23, at 6:30 p.m.

Regular library hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., except during the temporary Sunday closures. All patrons and staff are required to exit the building at closing time.
